WIPHALA, THE NATIVE INDIAN ANDEAN NATIONAL FLAG

A woman with a Wiphala
After the events occurred in Catalonia last October, 14, The Grandma decided to take some days of relax to think about present and future. During these thirty days, she has been reading her favourite author, Salvador Espriu, one of the best writers in Catalan Literature.

Salvador Espriu was a writer who lived the Spanish Civil War and the Post War under the Francoist dictatorship. It was very difficult for him to survive in the middle of a big cultural repression and the continuous loss of civil rights that was that dictatorship. He couldn't exile and he started an internal exilium creating an own world called Sinera (Arenys, his real town, read from right to left) to try to survive and resist those dark years.

The Grandma thinks that those dark times have never disappeared in the Spanish society and nowadays they are clearer than ever. The struggle is hard but the prize is freedom and a society based in respect, tolerance and common effort. This struggle is very important and it is not a time to renounce but to fight, persevere and win.

During this month, The Grandma has been also a direct witness of terrible events occurred in Hong Kong, Ecuador, Brazil, Chile, Venezuela, Libya, Kurdistan and Bolivia. The reasons are the same -control of power by the upper social classes and slavery and resignation of poor ones-, but the targets are different -lithium in Bolivia, oil in Libya, Kurdistan and Venezuela, copper in Chile, control of population in Hong Kong or economic dependence and lawfare in Brazil and Catalonia.

The Grandma loves diversity and multiculturalism without forgetting the origin of ancient cultures. One of them, the Native American Andean population is a great example of suffering the effects of foreign colonisations and answering to them with a great resilience being proud of their culture and history.

Today, she wants to talk about the Wiphala, an important symbol of some native peoples of the Andes, in homage to all these countries that are suffering the avarice of the US with the
hypocritical consent of the EU. At the end, it is only a question of resisting or serving.

Before talking about the Wiphala, The Grandma has read a new chapter of Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party and Other Stories.

The Wiphala is a square emblem, commonly used as a flag, representing some native peoples of the Andes that include today's Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and parts of Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

The suyu wiphalas are composed of a 7 × 7 square patchwork in seven colours, arranged diagonally. The precise configuration depends on the particular suyu represented by the emblem. The colour of the longest diagonal line (seven squares) determines which of the four suyus (regions) the flag represents: white for Qullasuyu, yellow for Kuntisuyu, red for Chinchaysuyu, and green for Antisuyu. There is also an alternate pattern for the Wiphala for Antinsuyu. Additionally a Wiphala also exists for Tupac Katari and the Tupac Katari Guerrilla Army.

Wiphala
Article 6, section II of the 2009 Bolivian constitution establishes the Wiphala as the dual flag of Bolivia, along with the red-yellow-green tricolor.

In modern times the Wiphala has been confused with a rainbow flag which is wrongly associated with the Tawantinsuyu (Incan Empire). There is debate as to whether there was an Inca or Tawantisuyu flag. There are 16th and 17th-century chronicles and references that support the idea of a banner attributable to the Inca. However, it represented the Inca himself, not the empire. Also its origins are from symbols and mural designs found in several civilizations of the Andes with thousands of years of history.

The Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg, Sweden, holds a Wiphala that is dated through a C-14 test to the 11th century. It originates from the Tiwanaku region, and is part of a collection based on a kallawaya medicine man's grave.

The seven colors of the actual Wiphala reflect those of the rainbow. According to the Katarista movement, whose interpretation is promoted by the Bolivian authorities, the significance and meaning for each color are as follows:

Red: The Earth and the Andean man.

Orange: Society and culture.

Yellow: Energy and strength.

White: Time and change.

Green: Natural resources and wealth.

Blue: The Cosmos.

Violet: Andean government and self-determination.

The Aimara wiphala is a square flag divided into 7 × 7 (49) squares. The seven rainbow colors are placed in diagonal squares. The exact arrangement and colors varies with the different versions, corresponding to the suyus or Tupac Katari. It is very prominent in marches of indigenous and peasant movements in Bolivia.

This rainbow squares flag is used as the pan-indigenous flag of Andean peoples in Bolivia and has recently occasionally been adopted by Amazonian groups in political alliance.

Bolivian president Evo Morales established the Qullasuyu wiphala as the nation's dual flag, along with the previous red, yellow, and green banner in the newly ratified constitution. The Wiphala is also officially flown on governmental buildings.

The most important thing is the indigenous people
are not vindictive by nature.
We are not here to oppress anybody -but to join together
and build Bolivia, with justice and equality.

RIO DE JANEIRO: OLHA QUE COISA MAIS LINDA...

The Beans arriving to Copacabana Palace
The Beans have just arrived to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. After a flight of fourteen hours, resting eight of them, the family is ready to enjoy the city and its carnival. The family is going to rest in the Copacabana Palace tonight and tomorrow, they're going to go to their own residence in Santa Teresa.

Rio de Janeiro or simply Rio is the second-most populous municipality in Brazil and the sixth-most populous in the Americas. The metropolis is anchor to the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, the second-most populous metropolitan area in Brazil and sixth-most populous in the Americas. Rio de Janeiro the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's third-most populous state. Part of the city has been designated as a World Heritage Site, named Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea, by UNESCO on 1 July 2012 as a Cultural Landscape.

More information:  UNESCO

Founded in 1565 by the Portuguese, the city was initially the seat of the Captaincy of Rio de Janeiro, a domain of the Portuguese Empire. Later, in 1763, it became the capital of the State of Brazil, a state of the Portuguese Empire.

In 1808, when the Portuguese Royal Court transferred itself from Portugal to Brazil, Rio de Janeiro became the chosen seat of the court of Queen Maria I of Portugal, who subsequently, in 1815, under the leadership of her son, the Prince Regent, and future King João VI of Portugal, raised Brazil to the dignity of a kingdom, within the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and Algarves.

Rio stayed the capital of the pluricontinental Lusitanian monarchy until 1822, when the War of Brazilian Independence began. This is one of the few instances in history that the capital of a colonising country officially shifted to a city in one of its colonies. Rio de Janeiro subsequently served as the capital of the independent monarchy, the Empire of Brazil, until 1889, and then the capital of a republican Brazil until 1960 when the capital was transferred to Brasília.

Rio de Janeiro is one of the most visited cities in the Southern Hemisphere and is known for its natural settings, Carnival, samba, bossa nova, and balneario beaches such as Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon. In addition to the beaches, some of the most famous landmarks include the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado mountain, named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World; Sugarloaf Mountain with its cable car; the Sambódromo, a permanent grandstand-lined parade avenue which is used during Carnival; and Maracanã Stadium, one of the world's largest football stadiums.

The Beans in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro
Copacabana is a bairro -neighbourhood- located in the South Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is known for its 4 km balneario beach, which is one of the most famous in the world.

The district was originally called Sacopenapã, translated from the Tupi language, it means the way of the socós, the socós being a kind of bird, until the mid-18th century. It was renamed after the construction of a chapel holding a replica of the Virgen de Copacabana, the patron saint of Bolivia. The name may be derived from the Aymara kota kahuana, meaning view of the lake.

Copacabana beach, located at the Atlantic shore, stretches from Posto Dois to Posto Seis. Leme is at Posto Um. There are historic forts at both ends of Copacabana beach; Fort Copacabana, built in 1914, is at the south end by Posto Seis and Fort Duque de Caxias, built in 1779, at the north end. One curiosity is that the lifeguard watchtower of Posto Seis never existed. Hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and residential buildings dot the promenade facing Avenida Atlântica.

I'm moving to Rio permanently with my family. It's one of the places left in the world where people still live with a big charge of poetry on a daily basis. I feel we've kind of lost that here in Europe.

CARNIVAL IN TENERIFE: CREATING YOUR FAKE PROFILE

Ready to enjoy the Canarian Carnival
The Bonds have just arrived to Tenerife Island in Canary Islands. They are going to stay four days in the island enjoying the carnival, one of the most famous around the world.

There are three kinds of carnival. For one hand, you can enjoy the pro-protest carnival, where people wear different costumes and are critic with real characters o situations, especially, politics and religious. You can find this carnival in places like Vilanova i la Geltrú or Sitges, in Barcelona. For other hand, you can enjoy another carnival, a great coloured-party where people sing and dance without stopping. You can find this carnival in places like Rio de Janeiro in Brazil or Tenerife Island in Canary Islands and finally, there is Venice. Venice is Venice.

Carnival is a synonymous of costumes and fake identities, and this is the reason because of the family is starting to prepare their own fake profiles.

The Bonds have wanted to visit the lucky islands because of Montse Bond, who has an old friend in the island, Nikka and she wished to visit her but they're not only going to participate in the carnivale, the family wants to climb up Teide, the Canarian volcano and visits two more islands: Hierro and La Palma, two volcanic islands very important for the future of the planet.

These two visits are the reason because of The Bonds are assisting in that moment to a conference about occupational hazards. They want to climb up volcanoes and walk across high dangerous sismic zones and they need to know as things as it was possible about protection against these dangers.

Next Monday, The Grandma is going to talk about ecology, nature and colours to prepare a new day about environment.

It's a party that's being organized; it's not a protest.
The carnival is not like it was a long time ago.
Before it was do as you like, take to the streets.

NEW FAMILY, NEW ADVENTURES

Matryoshka dolls
Today, The Grandma has met The Poppins, her new family. It has been a beautiful an intensive day for this new family.

After listening to all the explanations of MJ very carefully, the family has started to introduce itself and every member has adopted her new role: nationality and job.

It seemed that it was a normal day until the family has received her first, but not the last, incredible information: M.Carmen Poppins is kidnapped in a prison in Siberia.

Tomorrow, the family will work together to rescue her because they have another objective: travel to Brazil to help Isa Addams-Poppins in her Olympic Games training and to Scotland to visit Núria’s hometown.

Without a lot of time to do nothing, they’ve talked about the order of MPT in a sentence and about how to start to write a composition paying attention to the most important information: Who? When? Where? and What?

So you set out to travel to Rome and end up in Istanbul.
You set off for Japan and you end up on a train across Siberia.
The journey, not the destination, becomes a source of wonder.
