TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE, HE-WHO-MUST-NOT-BE-NAMED

Tom Riddle (adult)
Today, The Stones and The Grandma have listened to the most terrible and frightened story never explained in Hogwarts.

It is the story of Tom Riddle, an English half-blood wizard considered to have been the most powerful and dangerous Dark Wizard of all time. He is also known as Lord Voldemort.

Before discovering the story of Tom Riddle, The Grandma has offered The Stones a new Cambridge Key English Test A2 Example.

Tom Marvolo Riddle, later known as Lord Voldemort or, alternatively as You-Know-Who, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, or the Dark Lord, is an English half-blood wizard considered to have been the most powerful and dangerous Dark Wizard of all time.

He was amongst the greatest wizards to have ever lived, often considered to be the second most powerful wizard in history, his only superior being Albus Dumbledore.

The only child and son of Tom and Merope Riddle via the coercive use of a love potion, Tom Riddle was raised in the Muggle-run Wool's Orphanage after his father abandoned his new family on the streets of London when the potion's influence was lifted, and his mother died moments after giving birth to and naming him after his father and maternal grandfather, Marvolo Gaunt.

Tom Riddle began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was sorted into Slytherin house. Some of his early activities included the opening of Salazar Slytherin's Chamber of Secrets and the use of its monster to attack Muggle-born students; several months' service as a purchasing agent for the Dark artefacts shop Borgin and Burkes; use of the ability to speak Parseltongue; and the attainment of immortality, a process begun upon the creation of his first Horcrux at the age of sixteen.

Tom Riddle (teenager)
Splitting his own spirit into a total of eight fragments, Riddle created seven Horcruxes; one unintentionally and without his knowledge -Harry Potter.

Abandoning his Muggle name, he became the self-proclaimed Lord Voldemort, which was an anagram of his birth name. He commanded a veritable army of Dark creatures, committed numerous murders personally and through his followers, and on one occasion nearly succeeded and on a later occasion did succeed in taking over the Ministry of Magic, installing a puppet Minister, Pius Thicknesse, who was controlled with the Imperius Curse.

Voldemort was ripped from his body after attempting to kill Harry Potter and, though unable to die, was not able to regain a permanent and physical body, thus spending the intervening fourteen years a shell, less than the meanest ghost, but alive.

Unknown to most, however, Voldemort's legacy and bloodline would live on through his daughter Delphini, whom he conceived with his loyal follower Bellatrix Lestrange; sometime after the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.

Tom Riddle's broken and mutilated soul was then trapped in Limbo for eternity, unable to move on to the afterlife or even return as a disembodied spirit.

Tom Marvolo Riddle was born at Wool's Orphanage in London. His mother Merope staggered to the door of the orphanage, gave birth to Tom there, and died shortly after. Riddle grew up in the dingy orphanage, completely unaware of his wizarding heritage.

Since the Muggle orphanage staff did not know anything about his mother, they did not know about his magical background. Instead, they believed that Merope was a circus worker, as Mrs Cole told Albus Dumbledore shortly before his first meeting with Tom Riddle. It is unknown whether or not the staff relayed this to TomRiddle before his first encounter with Albus Dumbledore.

Tom Riddle (teenager)
Despite his ignorance of his mother's true background, Tom Riddle did have some grasp on his abilities beyond that of normal magical children of his same age, and an unusually high degree of control over them. He could move objects with his mind and cause them to float wherever he wished, manipulate animals and creatures as he wished, speak Parseltongue, and use his power to inflict harm on other orphans.

After getting into a fight with fellow orphan Billy Stubbs, he used his powers to hang the boy's rabbit from the rafters. On one occasion, he took two other orphans, Dennis Bishop and Amy Benson, into a cave, where he performed an act so horrifying that the two orphans were traumatised into silence. Afterwards, he may have told them, in some means, not to tell anyone what happened in the cave. Tom Riddle also stole from other orphans and hid their things in his cupboard like trophies.

When Tom Riddle was eleven, Albus Dumbledore, who at the time was the Transfiguration teacher at Hogwarts, talked to Mrs Cole, who informed him of how unusual the boy was, sharing tales of his extraordinary influence over the other children.

When Albus Dumbledore was at last introduced to the boy, Riddle at first believed him to be a doctor or psychiatrist of some sort, come to take him to an asylum because of what the staff had seen. He was convinced after Albus Dumbledore demonstrated his power by using a Flame-Freezing Charm on Tom Riddle's cupboard and revealed that Hogwarts was a school for people with magic, whereupon Riddle realised that was what his abilities were.

Tom Riddle also mentioned his proficiency for Parseltongue in this same meeting, asking if it was a common gift amongst wizards, to which Albus Dumbledore gave no reply. Albus Dumbledore also admonished Tom Riddle for stealing from others and made him return the items with his apologies. He also warned Tom Riddle to stop his misbehaviour, as Hogwarts had an honour code whereupon lying, cheating and stealing were not tolerated.

At a very early age, it was clear that Tom Riddle displayed a desire to be different and set apart from others, as it was hinted when he mentioned his dislike of his own name, because it was such a common name.

Albus Dumbledore & Tom Riddle (child)
Tom Riddle was not surprised upon being informed by Albus Dumbledore that he was a wizard -he was, in fact, eager to believe that he had special gifts that no one else had. Tom Riddle also showed an eminent fear of death, considering it a human weakness.

He claimed that his mother could not have been a witch, because if she was magical, then she would have been able to avoid dying, and thought his father was a wizard. He asked if his father was an alumnus of Hogwarts, to which Albus Dumbledore said he did not know offhand.

Tom Riddle's abuse of his wizarding powers alarmed Albus Dumbledore. He resolved to keep a close eye on him, something he should have done in any case, seeing as he was alone and friendless.

Albus Dumbledore also warned Tom Riddle that at Hogwarts he would be introduced to the laws that controlled the usage of magic in the wizarding world, and that law-breakers were punished with severity not by Hogwarts but the Ministry of Magic. Tom Riddle's demeanour changed after Dumbledore reprimanded him; he became more guarded and shielded his reactions.

Albus Dumbledore provided Tom Riddle with enough information to find Diagon Alley and Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. He also provided Tom Riddle with a stipend from school funds so that he could purchase his books and equipment. Travelling on his own to Diagon Alley, Tom Riddle bought some second-hand robes and spell books for himself, along with his wand -thirteen-and-a-half inches, yew, phoenix feather core- at Ollivander's.

Garrick Ollivander later said that the wand was very powerful; Lord Voldemort was very pleased with it until the wand failed him during his confrontation with Harry Potter in the Little Hangleton graveyard.

Ten years into the war, when Lord Voldemort was at the height of his dominion, a prophecy was given by Sybill Trelawney to Albus Dumbledore which predicted the fall of the Dark Lord. This prophecy was given in the Hog's Head Inn during an interview for the position of Professor of Divination. This prophecy was overheard by Death Eater and informant Severus Snape.

Tom Riddle (adult)
Quirus Quirrel & Lord Voldemort
According to Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape only heard half of the prophecy and was then thrown out by the barman, Aberforth Dumbledore, Albus' brother. He relayed to Lord Voldemort what he had heard, not realising that he had missed an important part of the message.

Trelawney's description of the night's events was a bit different however, as she stated that after feeling ill, Aberforth burst into the room with Snape in tow, whom he had caught eavesdropping at the door. This is in contrast with Albus Dumbledore's description of events. However, this may be due to the fact that Albus Dumbledore had wished to conceal the identity of the spy from Harry, and told him a simplified version of the events. In any case, Lord Voldemort received only the first part of the prophecy. Feeling threatened, he sprang into action to prevent the fulfilment of the prophecy.

There were, at the time, two babies to whom the prophecy could have referred -Harry Potter, the half-blood son of James and Lily Potter; and Neville Longbottom, the pure-blood son of Frank and Alice Longbottom. Both families had sought to thwart Lord Voldemort three times, and both families were members of the Order of the Phoenix. Both children in question were born at the end of the seventh month, July.

Lord Voldemort chose to target Harry Potter instead of Neville Longbottom; Albus Dumbledore suspected this was because Harry Potter shared a similar family heritage with Lord Voldemort, both of them being half-bloods.

During his childhood and early adulthood, Tom Marvolo Riddle was tall and handsome, with pale skin, jet black hair, and dark eyes. When Harry saw him in a memory in the Pensieve, he saw that there was no trace of the Gaunt family in his face, and that he was his father in miniature: tall for eleven years old, dark-haired and pale.

Tom Riddle's good looks continued to increase as he grew older, and he cunningly used them to charm many of the teachers at Hogwarts. While in Wool's Orphanage, he wore the standard grey tunic as with all the other children, and switched over to the Hogwarts uniform when he attended the school, gaining the Prefect and Head Boy badges when he attained those positions. When he worked in Borgin and Burkes, he wore a simple black suit.

Peter Pettigrew & Lord Voldemort
Lord Voldemort was considered by many to be the most evil wizard in hundreds and hundreds of years. His nature far exceeded that of any common evildoer and Albus Dumbledore stated that he went beyond normal evil in the extent of his crimes.

Rubeus Hagrid claimed that while all Dark Wizards go bad, Lord Voldemort went worse than worse. Indeed, Lord Voldemort speedily developed into a power-obsessed megalomaniac of the worst kind and the worst of any known Dark Wizard, being considered by all to be far more evil than even Gellert Grindelwald.

He was unable and unwilling to express remorse or empathy for the countless crimes he had committed. This was a stark contrast to Grindelwald, who proved to display genuine remorse for his crimes and even before his fall, pity for those abused for their magic and even if only a little, care for his followers, all which Lord Voldemort completely lacked.

These anti social traits were seen in his childhood, from stealing, to disturbing incidences with other orphans. Albus Dumbledore stated that the young Tom Riddle had a certain disregard for rules. In adult life, he performed the darkest of magic and had no regard for human life. He was a prolific killer, killing so many he created an army of Inferi.

More information: Screen Rant I & II

Lord Voldemort also did not believe in the concept of good and evil, as he made clear to Harry Potter in their encounter at the Mirror of Erised, and that only power and those too weak to seek it truly mattered.

He was more concerned about eliminating threats to his planned eternal domination of the world than ensuring pure-blood supremacy: as demonstrated by his efforts to destroy Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter, the Order of the Phoenix and any other opposition to his rule. He even went so far as to cast a taboo on his own name, knowing that the only people who'd dared to speak it were those with the will to oppose him.

Lord Voldemort
Lord Voldemort
Lord Voldemort was also extremely possessive, even toward objects that weren't of any use to him, such as when he discovered the twin cores of his and Harry's wands could not kill each other, so he asked for Lucius Malfoy's wand, but refused to give Lucius his old one, which also complements how egotistical Lord Voldemort was. He also had a tendency to hoard trophies or other oddities from his childhood and transformed them into Horcruxes.

Furthermore, due to his immense evil and lack of a human soul, he was completely unable to cast the Patronus Charm, an incredibly powerful and benevolent protective charm that is a manifestation of positive energy and happiness, none of which Lord Voldemort possessed.

Lord Voldemort was the most powerful, skilled and dangerous dark wizard of all time. He was amongst the greatest wizards to have ever lived, often considered to be the second most powerful wizard in history, his only superior being Albus Dumbledore.

Lord Voldemort was extremely talented even while still a student of Hogwarts, with Albus Dumbledore himself saying Lord Voldemort was the most brilliant student to have ever attended Hogwarts.

As an adult, Lord Voldemort became a tremendously powerful and accomplished wizard of nearly unrivalled skill, admired and feared by even the most powerful wizards and witches. Combined with his utter megalomania, Lord Voldemort was regarded as the most powerful and most dangerous Dark Wizard of all time, being the only dark wizard to surpass Gellert Grindelwald.

Tom is diminutive of Thomas, loaned from Aramaic and meaning twin. This choice can be explained by the fact that, to gain immortality, Tom Riddle divided, twinned in a way, his soul into different pieces so as to survive. Also, τόμος (tomos) is Ancient Greek for slice or piece, which could link his name to the Horcruxes.

His maternal grandfather's name Marvolo suggests marvelous, from Latin mirabilis: consisting of from mirari to wonder at, from root adjective mirus wonderful and suffix -bilis, denoting capacity.

A riddle is a form of word puzzle designed to test someone's ingenuity in arriving at its solution. Riddles were used as a way to both puzzle the audience and teach them to understand poetic language.

J. K. Rowling has never quite explained the origins of the name Voldemort but there are some possible theories. The most accurate etymology of Voldemort would be the French sentence Vol de mort which literally means flight of death, accurate considering the murder sprees he committed and his invention of a spell to achieve unsupported flight. The Catalan expression vol de mort, also means flight of death or, since Vol may also be from the Latin root volo (I will, wish, want), may mean death wish.

J. K. Rowling has said in an interview that the T in Voldemort is silent. This may be to the fact that the word mort in Catalan and French, meaning death, has a silent T.

In 2015, J.K. Rowling again confirmed in an interview that her preferred pronunciation of the name was with a silent T, though she noted ...but I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who pronounces it that way.

THE STONES DISCOVER WHO THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE IS

Professor Severus Snape
Today, The Stones and The Grandma have discovered who the Half-Blood Prince is. They have discovered all the details about an amazing incredible story that is going to arrive to the end soon.

Before discovering the Half-Blood Prince, The Grandma has offered them a new Cambridge Key English Test A2 Example.

Half-blood is the term commonly given to wizards and witches who had known Muggle or Muggle-born parents or grandparents.

Half-bloods were the most common type of wizard or witch, as the pure-blood wizarding population would have become extinct had they not inter-married with Muggles and Muggle-borns.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a fantasy novel written by British author J.K. Rowling and the sixth and penultimate novel in the Harry Potter series.

Set during Harry Potter's sixth year at Hogwarts, the novel explores the past of Harry's nemesis, Lord Voldemort, and Harry's preparations for the final battle against Lord Voldemort alongside his headmaster and mentor Albus Dumbledore.

The book was published in the United Kingdom by Bloomsbury and in the United States by Scholastic on 16 July 2005, as well as in several other countries. It sold nine million copies in the first 24 hours after its release, a record that was eventually broken by its sequel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Professor Severus Snape
There were many controversies before and after it was published, including the right to read copies delivered before the release date in Canada. Reception to the novel was generally positive, and it won several awards and honours, including the 2006 British Book of the Year award.

Reviewers noted that the book took on a darker tone than its predecessors, though it did contain some humour. Some considered the main themes to be love, death, trust, and redemption. The considerable character development of Harry and many other teenage characters also drew attention.

The film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released 15 July 2009 by Warner Bros.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth book in the Harry Potter series.

The first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was first published by Bloomsbury in 1997, with an initial print-run of 500 copies in hardback, 300 of which were distributed to libraries. By the end of 1997, the UK edition won a National Book Award and a gold medal in the 9- to 11-year-olds category of the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize.

The second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, was originally published in the UK on 2 July 1998 and in the US on 2 June 1999.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was then published a year later in the UK on 8 July 1999 and in the US on 8 September 1999.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was published on 8 July 2000 at the same time by Bloomsbury and Scholastic.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the longest novel in the Harry Potter series, was released 21 June 2003.

After the publishing of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the seventh and final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was released 21 July 2007. The book sold 11 million copies within 24 hours of its release: 2.7 million copies in the UK and 8.3 million in the US.

J.K. Rowling stated that she had Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince planned for years, but she spent an entire two months going over her plan before she began writing the story seriously.

Albus Dumbledore & Harry Potter
This was a lesson learned after she did not check the plan for Goblet of Fire and had to rewrite an entire third of the book. She started writing the book before her second child, David, was born, but she took a break to care for him.

The first chapter, The Other Minister, which features meetings between the Muggle Prime Minister, Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge, and his successor, Rufus Scrimgeour, was a concept J.K. Rowling tried to start in Philosopher's Stone, Prisoner of Azkaban, and Order of the Phoenix, but she found it finally works in Half-Blood Prince.

She stated that she was seriously upset writing the end of the book, although Goblet of Fire was the hardest to write. When asked if she liked the book, she responded, I like it better than I liked Goblet, Phoenix or Chamber when I finished them. Book six does what I wanted it to do and even if nobody else likes it and some won't, I know it will remain one of my favourites of the series. Ultimately you have to please yourself before you please anyone else!"

J.K. Rowling revealed the title of Half-Blood Prince on her website on 24 June 2004. This was the title she had once considered for the second book, Chamber of Secrets, though she decided the information disclosed belonged later on in the story.

On 21 December 2004, she announced she had finished writing it, along with the release date of 16 July. Bloomsbury unveiled the cover on 8 March 2005.

The film adaptation of the sixth book was originally scheduled to be released on 21 November 2008 but was changed to 15 July 2009. Directed by David Yates, the screenplay was adapted by Steve Kloves and produced by David Heyman and David Barron.

The film grossed over $934 million worldwide, which made it the second-highest-grossing film of 2009 worldwide and the fifteenth-highest of all time. Additionally, Half-Blood Prince gained an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.

MNST KINGSLEY SHACKLEBOLT & MME AMELIA BONES

Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt
Today, The Stones and The Grandma have met two members of the Ministry of Magic, Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt, a British pure-blood wizard in the employment of the Ministry of Magic and Madam Amelia Susan Bones, a British witch Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Before meeting Shacklebolt and Bones, The Grandma has offered a new Cambridge Key English Test A2 Example to The Stones.

Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt is a British pure-blood wizard in the employment of the Ministry of Magic.

He worked for the Ministry as an Auror, but joined the reconstituted Order of the Phoenix after being convinced of the return of Lord Voldemort.

Working undercover within the Ministry, he fed the Order with information, and misdirected the Ministry's efforts to locate Sirius Black by saying he was spotted in Tibet.

He fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, and was later assigned to guard the Muggle Prime Minister, posing as his secretary.

Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt
Forced into running away following the fall of the Ministry to Lord Voldemort, Kingsley continued to oppose the new regime. He fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, and was named Acting Minister for Magic in the aftermath.

When he was eventually officially confirmed in the position of Minister for Magic, he, along with Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, worked hard to change the Ministry. They eventually succeeded in greatly reducing the corruption and pure-blood bias within the organisation.

Not much has been revealed about Kingsley's life before becoming an Auror. All that is known is that he was born into a pure-blood wizarding family and that he attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in his youth, although it is unknown into which House he was sorted.

He also apparently met with James Potter, as he saw the physical similarities between him and his son Harry.

Kingsley worked as a high-ranking Auror in the Ministry of Magic, and was assigned to lead the task force for the recapture of the Azkaban-escapee Sirius Black. When rumour of Lord Voldemort's return was denied by the Ministry, Kingsley was convinced of his return, and subsequently joined the Order of the Phoenix.

More information: Wizarding World

Along with Nymphadora Tonks, he worked as a covert operative, keeping the Order supplied with information. In addition, since joining the reactivated Order, Kingsley was informed of Black's innocence as a fellow member of the Order, and so he sidetracked the investigation by feeding the Ministry disinformation that indicated Black was hiding in Tibet.

After Harry Potter was attacked by two dementors Kingsley volunteered to be a member of the Advance Guard.

The Advance Guard were to escort Harry to the Order's Headquarters at 12 Grimmauld Place in London.

Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt
Kingsley was part of the Order task force sent to escort Harry to safety.

Acting as a protector, he rode a Thestral with Hermione Granger disguised as Harry by way of the Polyjuice Potion.

During the subsequent battle, Kingsley and Hermione were chased by five Death Eaters, injuring two and possibly killing one.

Kingsley was a tall black wizard and was described as broad shouldered. He was bald, and wore a single gold hoop earring. He had a slow, deep voice that was said to be reassuring.

In contrast with many other wizards, he was capable of dressing properly as a Muggle, to the point that the Muggle Prime Minister could not tell the difference.

Kingsley was calm and controlled, with a deep reassuring voice and commanding stature. Unlike many wizards, Kingsley mastered the knack of dressing and acting like a Muggle, leading to his assignment to guard the Muggle Prime Minister during the Second Wizarding War.

Both shackle and bolt refer to means of imprisonment. Specifically, a shacklebolt is the threaded pin of a shackle allowing the linking of multiple chains and metal cables. This also hints at the reason his patronus is a lynx.

His first name, Kingsley suggests royalty, note the King in it. This may be the reason that in Potterwatch he was known as Royal.

I'm not getting rid of Kingsley Shacklebolt,
if that's what you're suggesting! He's highly efficient,
gets through twice the work of the rest of them.

British Prime Minister

Madam Amelia Susan Bones is a British witch and celebrated Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

orn to Mr. and Mrs Bones, she likely attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry before joining the Ministry of Magic.

Madam Bones, having a seat on the Wizengamot, presided over the disciplinary hearing of Harry Potter. She was fair, unlike Cornelius Fudge, the prosecutor, and was astounded and impressed by Harry's ability to conjure a corporeal Patronus.

Madam Amelia Susan Bones
She voted for the clearing of all of his charges and Harry was allowed to leave. A year after, Amelia was murdered, likely by Lord Voldemort, though she put up a valiant fight.

Little is known about Amelia's early life, other than that the First Wizarding War took a heavy toll on her family; her father and mother were killed by Lord Voldemort; Amelia's brother Edgar, a member of the Order of the Phoenix, his wife, and their children were murdered by Death Eaters.

She had at least one surviving sibling, however, as she and Edgar shared a niece, Susan, who was born to another brother.

As she was a partial namesake of her niece, it is likely that she was close to that brother. She attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during her Teenage Years.

More information: Screen Rant

Sometime after her schooling, Amelia joined the Ministry of Magic and was there-on known as Madam Bones. She became the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and had a seat on the Wizengamot.

Madam Amelia Susan Bones
Amelia Bones was described as being a square-jawed witch with close-cropped grey hair and a monocle. This gave her an appearance of being a serious person, which matched her personality perfectly. She also had a loud, booming voice.

Amelia Bones
was a serious, but fair person who did not overlook obvious points. She gave Harry Potter and Mrs Figg a chance to testify, and was also one to be impressed with remarkable feats, given her admiration of Harry's production of a corporeal Patronus at such a young age.

Unbiased and firm, she did not cave into Cornelius Fudge's intimidation and corrupt authority, and even openly expressed her friendliness with Arthur Weasley, a known supporter of Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter, even in Fudge's presence, whereas many other coworkers avoided him out of fear of the Minister threatening to fire anyone in league with them.

Amelia is a female given name. It is a variant of Amalia, derived from the Germanic word amal meaning work and means industrious and fertile. The diminutive is usually Amy, Lia, Mia, Mel, or Mimi.

Etymologists believe that the name Amelia/Amalia is unrelated to the Latin gens name Aemilia, which was translated into English as Emily. Equivalents of Aemilia/Emily in romance languages do sound similar to Amelia (Italian Emilia) but have a different origin from this Germanic name.

ARABELLA FIGG & ARGUS FLICH, HEALTH HAZARDS IN CATS

Crookshanks & Hermione Granger
Today, The Stones have received the wonderful visit of DR and Hermione Granger.

DR, their Occupational Hazards' teacher, has been talking them about labour risks in veterinary.

Hermione Granger has talked them about cats, their stories and their owners. She is the owner of Crookshanks, an amazing cat and she transformed into a cat thanks to a potion. She is always a member of Gryffindor, whose director, Professor Minerva McGonagall's Patronus is a cat. They have discovered this curious animal, the most typical pet in Hogwarts, an animal that has been always surrounded by mystery and magic.

There are some famous cats in Hogwarts and two people who are strongly relationed with them, Arabella Figg and Argus Flich, two Squibs.

More information: CDC

A Squib, also known as a wizard-born, is a non-magical person who is born to at least one magical parent.

Squibs are, in essence, wizard-born Muggles. They are rare and are looked upon with a degree of disdain by some witches and wizards, particularly pure-bloods. Muggle-born witches and wizards are descended from Squibs who married Muggles; the magical ability unexpectedly resurfaces after many generations.

In addition to being born into magical rather than Muggle families, Squibs are different from Muggles by their knowledge of the wizarding world. They are able to see things that are hidden from the Muggles and have access to certain magical objects and creatures that can help them.

Argus Filch, as well as Arabella Figg, have formed wizarding-like relationships with cats that, in the case of the latter, have been cross-bred with Kneazles.

Squibs should also be contrasted with the Muggle relatives of witches and wizards. Muggle parents, siblings or spouses are simply Muggles who happen to know about the magical world.

More information: Wizading World

Mrs Arabella Doreen Figg is a Squib, a dealer of cross-bred cats and kneazles, and a member of the Order of the Phoenix.

She lived on Wisteria Walk in Little Whinging, in a house that smelled strongly of cabbage; she also owned and extensively photographed at least four part-kneazle cats, named Mr Tibbles, Snowy, Mr Paws, and Tufty.

Arabella Figg
She lived near Harry Potter and the Dursley family, and used to babysit Harry, mainly to keep an eye on him for Albus Dumbledore.

As Dumbledore had believed Harry was too young to understand his place in the wizarding world, Mrs Figg kept her true identity a secret throughout most of Harry's childhood, and he knew nothing about her affiliation to the wizarding world until after he and Dudley Dursley were attacked by dementors.

Mrs Figg supported the Order to the best of her abilities, but probably did not fight at the Battle of Hogwarts. She most likely survived the war and continued cross-breeding and trading part-kneazle cats.

It is possible that she became a member of the Order of the Phoenix in the First Wizarding War, although her most notable contribution to the cause was taking up residence in Little Whinging, most probably on Albus Dumbledore's orders, to keep an eye on young Harry Potter. This may have begun prior to the end of the First War, initially in order to watch over the Dursley family.

Arabella Figg lived in a Muggle community, working undercover for the Order of the Phoenix. Most of her job involved watching Harry Potter and ensuring that no harm came to him from Lord Voldemort.

More information: Wizading World

During times when the Dursley family went on holiday, they left Harry Potter with Mrs Figg, who once gave him an ancient chocolate cake as a treat but most often bored him senseless with pictures of her part-kneazle cats.

She made sure he didn't particularly enjoy his time with her, and took care never to reveal her heritage to either Harry or the Dursleys, to ensure that the Dursleys would not withdraw Harry from her care.

Lord Voldemort returned to power. Informed of Voldemort's return by Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore gave Sirius Black the task of alerting the old crowd of Voldemort's return, including Arabella Figg, Remus Lupin and Mundungus Fletcher.

Despite hearing the name Figg, Harry was unaware that this was the same Mrs Figg he had been neighbours with.

Arabella Figg
Harry and his cousin Dudley were attacked by dementors in Little Whinging.

Figg sensed the distinct presence of the Dementors and despite, as a Squib, being unable to actually see them, she was still able to describe the Dementors in front of the Wizengamot during Harry's trial. Not trusting Mundungus Fletcher to effectively fulfil his duties of following and protecting Harry, she charged Mr Tibbles with the task, and upon discovering Mundungus had abandoned his post, she eventually tracked Harry and his cousin Dudley down herself, to discover they had just barely survived a dementor attack.

As the three walked back to the Dursleys, with Harry half carrying Dudley, she revealed that she was not a Muggle, as previously believed, but a Squib, and moreover, a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Before returning Harry to Privet Drive, she apologised for the way she had been forced to treat him while he was growing up.

More information: Screen Rant

Mrs Figg was also a witness at Harry's trial before the Wizengamot, regarding his unauthorised use of magic as an underaged wizard. She arrived in her bedroom slippers, and her description of the Dementors was unimpressive, as she described them as big and wearing cloaks. However, she ultimately managed to convince Amelia Bones and various other unbiased members of the Wizengamot with her accurate description of a Dementor's presence.

Despite Cornelius Fudge's attempts to discredit her on the basis of being a Squib, Mrs Figg, along with Albus Dumbledore, managed to persuade the Ministry to clear Harry of all charges.

Arabella Figg is described as a batty old woman with grizzled grey fly away hair, almost always seen wearing a hairnet and tartan carpet slippers.

Arabella Figg
In Harry Potter's youth, the Dursleys left him in Mrs Figg's care at least once a year, and during their time together, she had often forced him to look endlessly at photos of all the cats she'd ever owned.

Figg may be variation of a fig, a fruit-bearing tree. In Biblical times, the fig tree was important to Roman and Hebrew cultures as a valuable source of food and medicinal ingredients, and its flowering signified the end of winter.

In addition, fig leaves are associated with concept of a poorly concealed secret, with common usage in classical sculptures and paintings of nudes. This may be a reference to the fact that Mrs Figg is a Squib concealing herself as a Muggle, which was arguably poorly done, given her reputation of being quite eccentric.

In Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot thriller The Clocks a Mrs Hemming with an equal fascination of cats has a young kitten named Arabella, which may be a likely inspiration.

Another possibility for the name Arabella may be from the classic car of the main character sitcom Nanny and the Professor, the main charcter Phoebe Figalily, herself a magical being.

Mr Tibbles was a part-kneazle cat owned by Arabella Figg. He appeared to have the ability to communicate with humans, as he was able to inform his owner when Harry and his cousin, Dudley Dursley, were attacked by two Dementors.

The name Tibbles is spelling variant of Tibbals and means son of Tibbal which is an English form of the name Theobald. The name is deriving from the Old High German first name Dietbald which means people+bold.

Tibbles and the variant Tibby became popular cat names in the Middle Ages due to popularity of the cat Tibert in the Reynard the Fox stories. The character Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet was named after Tibert and is mocked in the play as the Prince of Cats.

Mr Paws was one of Mrs Figg's part-Kneazles. The other three were Mr Tibbles, Snowy and Tufty.

Harry Potter saw it, or possibly its picture, when he went to stay with Mrs Figg when Dudley got to go to places on his birthday.

Harry found a hard time being remorseful when Mrs Figg broke her leg after reminding himself that it would be a while before he had to see Mr Tibbles, Snowy, Tufty and Mr Paws again.

Tufty was one of Mrs Figg's part-Kneazle cats. The other three were Mr Tibbles, Snowy and Mr Paws.

Snowy was one of Arabella Figg's pet cats. The other three were Mr Tibbles, Mr Paws and Tufty. Whenever Harry Potter got sent to her house on the Dursleys orders, she would show him pictures of all her cats, which he did not find terribly entertaining. Most likely, they were actually Kneazles or part Kneazles.

Dumbledore's orders.
I was to keep an eye on you but not say anything, you were too young.
I'm sorry I gave you such a miserable time, Harry,
but the Dursleys would never have let you come
if they'd thought you enjoyed it. It wasn't easy, you know...

Argus Filch is a Squib and the caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Filch usually wandered around the school corridors with his cat Mrs Norris, trying to catch students breaking the school rules and complaining about Peeves the Poltergeist.

After Mrs Norris was petrified by Salazar Slytherin's Basilisk, Filch was furious; however, his cat was healed by the end of the year. When Dolores Umbridge became High Inquisitor at Hogwarts, Filch gladly supported her. The next year, he was responsible for recognising Dark objects that were brought into Hogwarts.

Argus Filch
Filch helped the students evacuate during the Battle of Hogwarts and participated in the battle himself. He kept his job of caretaker after the Second Wizarding War.

Filch is also the only one of the Hogwarts staff to stay at Hogwarts Castle during the summer holidays.

Little is known about Filch's early life. He was born to at least one wizard parent somewhere in the British Isles. Despite his magical parentage, Filch was a Squib, meaning he could not perform magic.

Filch joined the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, succeeding Apollyon Pringle as Caretaker.

Filch waged a constant war against the students and Peeves, the school's resident poltergeist. He disliked the students and constantly hassled them over the littlest infraction and took delight in the doling out of detention-worthy write-ups.

Filch had already filled at least one thousand and fifty-six boxes with punishment records.

Filch frequently patrolled the hallways at night-time, hunting down students wandering out of bed and looking for excuses to give them detentions. In his years as Caretaker, Filch learned all about the Castle's secret passageways and hidden doors better than anyone but the Weasley twins and the Marauders.

Filch lived in a dingy and windowless office containing filing cabinets with detailed records of all the students Filch had disciplined. A highly polished collection of chains and manacles hung on the wall behind Filch's desk. He always begged Headmaster Albus Dumbledore to let him suspend students by their ankles from the ceiling.

Filch did many write-ups of James Potter and Sirius Black, occasionally accompanied by the names of Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew.

Argus Filch & Mrs. Norris
Filch, probably on a tip-off from Severus Snape, whose obsession it had become to expose his arch-rival, James Potter in wrongdoing, confiscated the Marauder's Map after the Marauders over-reached themselves and were cornered.

Filch stored the map in a cabinet marked Confiscated and Highly Dangerous. Although Filch was a Squib and could not make the map work properly, he did know that it was called the Marauder's Map.

Filch had Mrs Norris, his cat, following Rubeus Hagrid every time he went up into the Castle.

Filch and Mrs Norris found the cursed ice. Suspecting it was linked to the Cursed Vaults, he was about to report to Dumbledore, but spotted Professor Severus Snape first and told him instead. He brought the Professor to the corridor where he found the ice.

During this time, the Marauder's Map was stolen from his office by a thief that he suspected to be Peeves. The Map was later brought back to Filch's office and kept there until Fred and George Weasley nicked it during their first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after being hauled to his office for letting off a Dungbomb in a corridor.

During the Start-of-Term Feast, Filch stood by the double doors leading to the Great Hall as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore gave his start-of-term notices.

Argus Filch & Mrs. Norris
Argus Filch was a rheumatic man with hunched-shoulders and a hunchback. He had a horrible, pouchy and pasty face and bulging, pale eyes, along with sunken, veined cheeks. He had long hair with a bald spot on the top of his head and quivery jowls.

Skinny-ankled, Filch would usually wheeze and shuffle when walking. He had knobbly hands and whenever he got the flu, a bulbous and unusually purple nose.

The name Argus comes from Greek mythology, where it was the name of a giant with one hundred eyes who served the goddess Hera as a watchman, much like Mr Filch's role in patrolling the hallways of Hogwarts.

His surname, Filch, is an English word meaning to steal, usually in a sneaky manner.

Mrs Norris was the pet cat of Argus Filch, the caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Mrs Norris was described as having an unusually strong connection with her master, alerting him to any students misbehaving inside the school grounds.

She was described as appearing almost the same way as Filch, with bulging yellow, lamp-like eyes, a scrawny, skeletal body and dust-coloured fur.

Mrs Norris was born sometime prior, and become the pet cat of the Hogwarts school caretaker, Argus Filch. She formed an unusually strong bond with her owner, and often alerted him to any misbehaving students almost instantly. Because of this, she along with Filch were widely loathed by most of the Hogwarts student body, and many students had the urge to give her a good kick.

Rowling said she obtained the name Mrs Norris from a character in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, who is similarly odious and is hanging around in the background a lot.

He's the most intelligent of his kind I've ever met.
(Sirius Black's acknowledgement of Crookshanks' advanced intelligence)

Crookshanks is Hermione Granger's pet cat. He was half-Kneazle, as evidenced by his lion-like appearance, ability to solve problems on his own without aid or teaching, and clear dislike of and ability at recognising untrustworthy persons, even if they are transfigured.

Crookshanks was purchased from Magical Menagerie by Hermione Granger. The saleswoman from whom she had purchased him stated that he had been in the shop for a long time as nobody wanted him.

Crookshanks
Crookshanks
During the height of the Second Wizarding War, Crookshanks stayed at the the Burrow. It is unknown what happened to him after the war, but it can be assumed that he was returned to Hermione.

Crookshanks was purchased by Hermione Granger from the Magical Menagerie, who had originally gone there seeking an owl. The proprietor informed Hermione that he had been there for quite some time, and that nobody wanted him

Hermione took Crookshanks to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with her and he was present on the train when dementors boarded in search of Sirius Black

Perhaps because he was half-kneazle, the newly-adopted cat demonstrated the ability to detect frauds masquerading as animals, most notable of which being Animagi.

Crookshanks attacked Peter Pettigrew in his Animagus form of Scabbers, Ron's beloved pet rat when Ron took him in as he was looking unwell after the Weasley family's trip to Egypt. Afterwards, Crookshanks sought Scabbers out even attacking him in Ron's presence and causing the rat to seek hiding places.

The name Crookshanks seems to refer to the cat's bandy legs, from crook, meaning a bend, and shank, a term for the lower part of the legs. It is likely to be derived from the Scottish surname Cruikshanks, which is pronounced in exactly the same way

George Cruikshank was a well-known British illustrator in the 1800s and illustrated Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist, the first of the famous orphan novels that influenced J. K. Rowling as she came up with the character Harry Potter.
