ROSES, THE GREEK MASSALIAN COLONY OF 'RHODE'

The Grandma visits Roses, Alt Empordà
Today, The Grandma is visiting Roses, a wonderful town with Greek origins in L'Alt Empordà, Girona.

She has travelled there to meet up with Alberto, a closer friend who is spending her holiday in this amazing place.

Alberto and The Grandma have been talking about Roses and its Greek origins and they have been remembering how important has been Greek culture and its influence over Mediterranean countries.

Roses is a municipality in the comarca of the Alt Empordà, located on the Costa Brava, in Catalonia. It is the site of the former bishopric of Rotdon, now a Latin Catholic titular see.

It is situated on the coast at the northern end of the Gulf of Roses, and is an important fishing port and tourist centre.

The origins of Roses, in Greek Rhode, are disputed. A popular theory holds it was founded in the 8th century BC by Greek colonists from Rhodes.

It seems more probable that it was founded in the 5th century BC by Greeks from Massalia (Marseilles), perhaps with an admixture of colonists from neighbouring Emporion, today's Empúries). Remains of the Greek settlement can still be seen.

Remains from the Roman period go back to the 2nd century BC and continue well into Christian times with a paleochristian church and necropolis. After the collapse of Roman power the town seems to have been abandoned, but a fortified settlement from the Visigothic period has been excavated on the nearby Puig Rom.

The mediaeval town grew around the monastery of Santa Maria de Roses, mentioned since 944.

Its jurisdiction was shared by the abbots of Santa Maria de Roses and the counts of Empúries.

In 1402 the county of Empúries was incorporated into the Crown of Aragon and Roses acquired the right to organize its own municipal government and economy.

In the first decades of the 16th century, Roses suffered repeated attacks by privateers from North Africa. To counter the threat, Charles V ordered the construction of extensive fortifications in 1543. In spite of the precautions, a naval squadron led by the Turkish admiral Barbarossa attacked and plundered the town some months later. After substantial revisions, the fortifications were completed in 1553, under Charles's son Philip II. The entire medieval town was enclosed by a bastioned pentagonal wall.

The defensive system was supplemented by the Castell de la Trinitat, some 2.5 km to the east. The town received a permanent military garrison, which profoundly changed its character. To minimise friction between the citizenry and the soldiers, barracks were constructed, but did not prevent the gradual movement of part of the population to outside the walls, where the modern town of Roses now is.

In the following centuries, the fortifications were severely tested. In 1645, during the Catalan Revolt, French troops besieged Roses and captured it. The Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659) restored the town to his current situation.

In 1693, during the War of the Grand Alliance the French captured the town again. This time the French occupation lasted until the Peace of Ryswick in 1697.

In 1712, during the War of the Spanish Succession, Austrian troops tried to take the city, but were driven off.

In 1719, during the War of the Quadruple Alliance, the French again attacked, but failed to take Roses.

After a long period of relative calm, the Wars of the French Revolution ushered in a new round of hostilities. In 1793, the French revolutionary government declared war on Spain. At first, the Spanish armies won a foothold in France, but in 1794 the revolutionary armies invaded Catalonia.

The Siege of Roses lasted from 28 November 1794 until 3 February 1795, when the garrison was safely evacuated by a Spanish naval squadron, except for 300 soldiers. The town was surrendered to France, but the war between France and Spain ended at the Peace of Basle signed in July 1795. The city quickly returned to Spanish control.

In 1808, Emperor Napoleon I of France forced King Charles IV of Spain and his son Ferdinand to abdicate and installed his brother, Joseph Bonaparte on the throne. When the Spanish people revolted against this high-handed behavior, French armies again invaded the country in the Peninsular War.

The fourth and last Siege of Roses occurred in 1808. During the operation, the Scottish Royal Navy captain, Thomas Cochrane assisted the Spanish by putting his men into Castell de la Trinitat to help defend the town. The Scot stayed until the citadel and the town surrendered, before evacuating himself and his men. In 1814, when the defeated French withdrew from Spain, they blew up the town's fortifications along with the Castell de la Trinitat. At this time, the ancient town, called the Ciutadella, was completely ruined. Meanwhile, to the east the modern town slowly continued to grow.

In 1879, Roses suffered a devastating economic crisis through phylloxera, a pest of the grapevines, that destroyed the town's wine growing industry. Some of the population moved to Barcelona or emigrated to the United States.

In the 20th century, notably in the period after World War II, Roses profited from the growth of tourism.

Over the last decades, important excavations have been carried out inside the walls of the Ciutadella concerning not only the Greek and Roman remains, but part of the medieval city and its walls. In the 1990s, extensive restoration work was carried out on the walls of the Ciutadella, and in 2004 a museum was opened inside it. A controversial restoration of the Castell de Trinitat was formally completed in 2010.

MS. PUBLISHER, HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN BROCHURES

The Grandma visits Sant Boi de Llobregat
Today, The Grandma has said goodbye to some friends in Sant Boi. She has finished a course with eleven wonderful people and they have been learning computer together.

Sant Boi de Llobregat is a town of 82,142 inhabitants in the Barcelona province in Catalonia, located aside the Llobregat river. The town is divided into six districts: Ciutat Cooperativa-Molí Nou, Marianao-Can Paulet, Barri Centre, Vinyets-Molí Vell, Camps Blancs-Canons-Orioles and Casablanca.

It borders to the north with the towns of Santa Coloma de Cervelló, Sant Joan Despí and the village of Sant Climent de Llobregat, to the east with the town of Cornellà de Llobregat, to the west with Viladecans and to the south with El Prat de Llobregat, having a narrow land extension to the south that enters into the Mediterranean Sea.

Though the main business activity is centered in the trading and service sector, Sant Boi also has a remarkable industrial activity, especially for metallurgy; agriculture is stimulated by the fertile alluvial lands at the mouth of Llobregat river and a mild climate, producing a wide variety of vegetables like the famous Llobregat's delta artichokes.

The finding of archeological remains corresponding to Iberian colonies (VI-I bC) and the Romans (I-V aC) -a noteworthy Roman bath is located near the river -suggests that the origins of Sant Boi can be found in pre-Roman times.

Like most of the surrounding lands, from the 8th to the 11th century the town was controlled by the Moors, until their expulsion from Iberia during the Reconquista. The Moors called it Alcala, which means castle, due to the existence of a hillock from where the river and the valley were dominated. Its present name derives from the name of Saint Baudilus, known as Boi or Baldiri in Catalonia.

During the Middle Ages the village was progressively populated, growing from the surroundings of the castle to adjacent zones.

The Grandma visits the Roman Baths in Sant Boi
A baroque-style church was built during the 16th century. The growth kept on during the following centuries, giving rise to numerous Masies, typical Catalan agricultural housing, near the river and the most fertile lands. At the end of the 19th century Sant Boi was a village of nearly 5000 inhabitants, with an economy mainly based in agriculture.

At the beginnings of the 20th century the first industries flourished in Sant Boi, ranging from brick manufacture to metalwork.

With the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939 there is a massive inflow of immigration coming from diverse points of the Spanish geography

These flows of population consisted mainly in people from villages and small towns searching a job and career opportunities in the town of Barcelona, stimulated by the increasing demand of workmanship in the regrowth of the Catalan industry during the postwar period. The population rises from 10.000 people in 1940 to 65.000 in 1975. This period is characterized by the construction of complete quarters like Casablanca, Camps Blancs, Cooperativa dedicated to housing for the immigration.

Nowadays Sant Boi is a town with more than 80,000 inhabitants, with well-established industrial and services sectors, and a healthy cultural and recreational offer.

Sant Boi is homeland of Baldiri Aleu, Manel Esteller, Pau Gasol and Marc Gasol.

The Grandma admires Manel Esteller a lot and she wants to talk about him a little.

Manel Esteller (born in Sant Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona, Catalonia, 1968) graduated in Medicine from the University of Barcelona in 1992, where he also obtained his doctorate, specializing in the molecular genetics of endometrial carcinoma, in 1996. He was an invited researcher at the School of Biological and Medical Sciences at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, during which time his research interests focused on the molecular genetics of inherited breast cancer.

Manel Esteller is the director of the Cancer Epigenetics and Biology Program (PEBC) of the Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research (IDIBELL), leader of the Cancer Epigenetics Group, professor of Genetics in the School of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, and research professor at the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). He is also the editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed journal Epigenetics.

Manel Esteller
Esteller works in the field of epigenetics of health and disease. Starting from identical genetic sequences, changes in histone modifications and DNA methylation can produce organisms with different features and distinct susceptibility to sickness. An example is monozygotic twins. To have a complete picture of what is going on with the epigenetic tapestry of our cells, Esteller has advocated the development of a comprehensive Human Epigenome Project (HEP) to map all the epigenetic marks in our genetic material. This could have a huge impact in cancer patients, because malignant cells have a profound dysregulation of DNA methylation and histone modification patterns. The good news is that the first pharmacological compounds to restore the normal epigenetic landscapes are starting to emerge.

Esteller edited the book DNA Methlyation: Approaches, Methods and Applications -in the book, he attempts to explain to readers how DNA methylation plays a role in disease, particularly the role in cancer. He also summarizes a lot of research from clinical trials and other research that has been done on DNA methylation in the human body to provide readers with many different point of views concerning the topic.

Epigenetics in biology and medicine is another book in which Esteller explained the main principles of epigenetics, new discoveries in the field, and how they can be applied functionally. He has examined the relationship between epigenetics and disease, genetic syndromes, immunity, cardiovascular disease, and epigenomics.

During three months, The Grandma has shared wonderful and unforgettable moments with her mates in class. They have learnt a lot about computers and Microsoft programmes. She likes Microsoft Publisher especially, because this program allows the possibility of creating your own publicity and your own brochures.

Microsoft Publisher is a desktop publishing application from Microsoft, differing from Microsoft Word in that the emphasis is placed on page layout and design rather than text composition and proofing.

Publisher is included in higher-end editions of Microsoft Office, reflecting Microsoft's emphasis on the application as an easy-to-use and less expensive alternative to the heavyweights with a focus on the small-business market, where firms do not have dedicated design professionals available to make marketing materials and other documents.

The Class, Sant Boi de Llobregat
However, it has a relatively small share of the desktop publishing market, which is dominated by Adobe InDesign and formerly by QuarkXPress.

While most Microsoft Office apps adopted ribbons for their user interface starting with Microsoft Office 2007, Publisher retained its toolbars and did not adopt ribbons until Microsoft Office 2010. LibreOffice has supported Publisher's proprietary file format (.pub) since February 2013.

Corel Draw X4 features read-only support. Adobe PageMaker also saves files with a .pub extension, but the two file formats are incompatible and unrelated.

Publisher supports numerous other file formats, including the Enhanced Metafile (EMF) format, which is supported on Windows platforms. The Microsoft Publisher trial version can be used to view .pub files beyond the trial period.

The Grandma hopes her mates have had a great experience in class and she wants to thanks them their perseverance, interest and motivation. Thanks to all of them: Alberto, Alicia, Ana, Ángeles, Cristian, Isabel, Lidia, María, Norah (aka Lili), Tere (aka Mayte) and Víctor. Good luck in your closer future and see you soon.

After saying goodbye to her classmates, The Grandma has studied her Ms. Excel course.

ALBERTO: POLISH RYGOR

Alberto Addams in Cracow, Polland
Alberto is another member of The Addams Family. He’s unquiet and inquisitive and, perhaps, because of this, he works as a TV Star. He has participated in different TV shows like Survivors, Big Brother and Kitchen Nightmares.

Alberto was born in Cracow (Poland), the country home of other famous people like Maria Skłodowska Curie (Marie Curie), Fryderyk Chopin and Mikołaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus), who wrote De revolutionibus orbium coelestium and theorized about another universe’s model where the Sun placed the Earth at its center. It’s not the case of Alberto’s life: its whole one is dedicated to his children, especially, after his wife, Marta, decided to enter into a convent in Poblet (Tarragona) and serve God. It was a great shock for all the family and the most affected was Alberto, because Marta is his beloved wife, the mother of his children and the center of his life, in Alberto’s words “the sun that illuminates and shines my life”.

We don’t know what happened between Alberto and Marta. It’s one of the best hidden secrets in this family, but some closer voices say that the influence of Polish culture over her was so intense that she consecrated her life to follow another famous Polish, Karol Józef Wojtyla (aka Pope John Paul II).

MARTA'S GOODBYE & JORDI'S WELCOME

The Addams Family is shocked. For one hand, the family has adopted a new member, Jordi, and for other hand Marta has decided to leave the family and has written a letter to her husband, Alberto.

Here it is...

Dear Alberto,

I have decided to change my life. It hasn’t been easy but I think, finally, I have found my way. I’ve decided to enter in a convent. I want to dedicate my life to myself. Sorry, for doing things in that way but… nobody is perfect! God will forgive my sins…and yours!

Take care of our lovely children and grandchild. I won’t forget you. They’re blood of my blood but, in that moment, I think that the best for us is to live separate lives. I have found my trust in God and I want to follow his path.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Always,

Marta

After this, the family has decided to prepare a travel to New York for trying to accept it and going on.

I will follow Him
Follow Him where ever he may go
And near Him I always will be
For nothing can keep me away
He is my destiny.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY GOES TO SCHOOL

Hand Addams
Last Friday, The Grandma received her new family: The Addams. Sixteen new members will enlarge the family. They’re from different European countries and they started with a lot of energy. After the bureaucratic explanations of MJ, they knew the real reasons of The Grandma for adopting them and they realized that there are 200 hours for learning a lot of English.

The Addams members are Alberto, Andrea, Daniel, Felipe, Isabel, Jorge, Lourdes (aka Lurdes), Lulú, Marta, Merche, Mónica, Naiara, Núria, Rocío, Rosana, Verónica and The Thing.

We were talking about adjectives and their position and preparing some passwords describing words with only three adjectives. The first objective of The Addams Family is preparing a travel to New York. Jorge gave the clue.
