WORKPLACE SAFETY AND HEALTH IN THE UNITED STATES

After visiting the Bronx Zoo, The Grandma has been reading about the workplace safety and health in the United States, and interesting report published by the U.S.Department of Labor. Remember: Always Be Careful!

Three U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) agencies have responsibility for the administration and enforcement of the laws enacted to protect the safety and health of workers in America.

 Occupational Safety and Health Administration

-OSHA administers the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act.

-Safety and health conditions in most private industries are regulated by OSHA or OSHA-approved state plans.

-Nearly every employee in the nation comes under OSHA's jurisdiction with some exceptions such as miners, some transportation workers, many public employees, and the self-employed.

-Employers subject to the OSH Act also have a general duty to provide work and a workplace free from recognized, serious hazards.

-OSHA also administers the Whistleblower Protection program, ensuring an employer cannot retaliate by taking "adverse action" against workers who report injuries, safety concerns, or other protected activity.

Mine Safety and Health Administration

-MSHA has responsibility for administration and enforcement of the Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, which protects the safety and health of workers employed in the nation's mines.

-The Act applies to all mining and mineral processing operations in the United States, regardless of size, number of employees, or method of extraction.

Fair Labor Standards Act

FLSA contains rules concerning the employment of young workers, those under the age of 18, and is administered and enforced by DOL's Wage and Hour Division. Intended to protect the health and well-being of youth in America, the FLSA contains minimum age restrictions for employment, restrictions on the times of day youth may work, and the jobs they may perform.

-Office of Workers' Compensation Programs-Administers four major disability compensation programs which provide wage replacement benefits, medical treatment, vocational rehabilitation and other benefits to certain workers or their dependents who experience work-related injury or occupational disease. -Office of the Ombudsman for the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program (EEOMBD) and the SHARE initiative also play a role in the administration of DOL workplace safety and health programs.

THE BEANS & RICHARD CASTLE: CREATING A LINCHPIN

The Beans continue their English classes. Today, they have studied the use of Too and Enough and the Adverbs of Manner.

Moreover, they have been talking about how to create a composition with a linchpin, an internal cohesion, and they have sent some whatsapps to express their feelings about the match between the Knicks and the Bulls. The match was amazing but they were witness of a murder scene and they have been helping Kate Beckett, the best detective of New York, and Richard Castle, the writer and Beckett's partner to solve the mystery.

For one hand, the family is looking for someone who takes care of Rhini, a beautiful rhino which is going to travel with them around the world. The rest of their pets are still in the Bronx Zoo waiting to be moved to their final destinity. 

After reading lots of CV's, the choosen person seems to be a young woman named Tania. Tomorrow, they have a meeting with her to exchange impressions.

The Beans in Saint Patrick's Cathedral

For another hand, The Beans have talked about poker and good and bad luck before  finishing the first chapter of Christmas Carol of Charles Dickens. They have also played some memo games and a hanger to relax a little before visiting Saint Patrick's Cathedral.

The Cathedral of St. Patrick, commonly called St. Patrick's Cathedral, is a decorated Neo-Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral church in the United States and a prominent landmark of New York City. 

It is the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, and a parish church, located on the east side of Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets in Midtown Manhattan, directly across the street from Rockefeller Center and specifically facing the Atlas statue. It is considered one of the most visible symbols of Roman Catholicism in New York City and the United States.

The Beans on the top of the Empire State

Today, The Beans have lived an intensive day. The family is still in New York City enjoying the city and its sights and working to improve their English. 

They have talked about the Adverbs of Frequency and the Prepositions of Place and Direction.

Firstly, the family has been involved in a terrible scandal when a local newspaper has accused them of being the main suspects of the fire in Trump's Tower. Without time to call the best lawyers, the family has demonstrated that if you work together you have more possibilities of success and they have been preparing their alibis. After being interrogated by the Metropolitan Police, all of them have returned to the hotel free of charges and without any doubt about their innocence. It's always better to have a good relationship with the Police.

Next, The Beans have decided to visit the Empire State, a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, the building has a roof height of 380 m and stands a total of 443.2 m tall, including its antenna.

Eli Bond-Bean and King Kong

The site of the Empire State Building, located on the west side of Fifth Avenue between West 33rd and 34th Streets, was originally part of an early 18th century farm. In the late 1820s, it came into the possession of the prominent Astor family, with John Jacob Astor's descendants building the Waldorf–Astoria Hotel on the site in the 1890s. By the 1920s, the family had sold the outdated hotel and the site indirectly ended up under the ownership of Empire State Inc., a business venture that included businessman John J. Raskob and former New York governor Al Smith.

The original design of the Empire State Building was a for a 50-story office building. However, after fifteen revisions, the final design was for a 86-story building, with an airship mast on top. This ensured it would be the world's tallest building, beating the Chrysler Building and 40 Wall Street, two other Manhattan skyscrapers under construction at the time that were also vying for that distinction.

The Beans and their rescue plan

When they were leaving the building, they have been astonished to see that Eli Bond-Bean was on the top of it kidnapped by King Kong. Quickly, they have thought a rescue plan to liberate Eli from King Kong's hands. The plan has been a total success.

Then, the family has decided to go to the zoo and talk with the bosses about a King Kong's adoption. They had got another point here. The zookeepers have never thought about this possibility but they have accepted The Beans' proposal.

The Prospect Park Zoo is a 4.9 ha zoo located off Flatbush Avenue on the eastern side of Prospect Park, Brooklyn, New York City. Its precursor, the Menagerie, opened in 1890. The present facility first opened as a city zoo on July 3, 1935, and was part of a larger revitalization program of city parks, playgrounds and zoos initiated in 1934 by Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. It was built, in large part, through Civil Works Administration and Works Project Administration (WPA) labour and funding.

The Beans with Barbra in her apartment

Finally, the family was exhausted. They have lived too many emotions in a day. The Grandma has received an incredible phone call.  

Barbra Streisand was on the other side of the line and she has invited all the family to a private concert in her apartment to relax and charge batteries.

Hold the line, Barbra! I'm going to talk with my family about your invitation. 

Barbra? Are you there? It's an enormous pleasure for us to come to your home and assist to your private concert. Taking profit of your trust, I would like to listen to "If you go way".
