Today, The Grandma has been talking with The Watsons about Riva, the Yugoslav singer who won the Eurovision Song Contest representing their country in 1989 and singing Rock Me.
Yugoslavia won the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest.
Before talking about Riva, The Grandma has offered a new Cambridge Key English Test A2 Example to The Watsons.
Yugoslavia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 27 times, debuting in 1961 and competing every year until its last appearance in 1992, with the exceptions of 1977–1980 and 1985. Yugoslavia won the 1989 contest and hosted the 1990 contest.
Ljiljana Petrović was Yugoslavia's first entrant in the contest in 1961 and placed eighth.
In 1962, Lola Novaković gave the country its first top five result, finishing fourth. This would remain Yugoslavia's only top five result until 1983, when Danijel finished fourth with the song Džuli. Novi Fosili also finished fourth in 1987 with Ja sam za ples.
In 1989, the country achieved its only victory in the contest, when Riva won with the song Rock Me.

Riva was a pop rock band from Zadar, Croatia, then Yugoslavia, in the late 1980s.
After forming in 1986, the band appeared on Zagrebfest 1988. Their song Rock Me won the Eurovision Song Contest 1989 in Switzerland, with a score of 137 points. According to author John Kennedy O'Connor in The Eurovision Song Contest -The Official History it was an unexpected win.
The band proved sceptics wrong, bringing the first and only victory for Yugoslavia. The contest was organised in Novi Sad by TV Zagreb, representing Yugoslav Radio Television, in 1990. The group members parted ways in 1991.
Rock Me was the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 1989, performed by Riva, representing Yugoslavia, the only time that this country won the Contest.
The song was performed in Serbo-Croatian, but the lead vocalist Emilija Kokić sang the song in English during the winners' encore.
The song's victory led to international awareness of Yugoslav and Croatian rock.
Riva's frontwoman Emilija Kokić continued to appear in various shows but had no significant success after the 1989 victory.
Emilija Kokić, born 10 May 1968, is a Croatian singer. She was the lead singer of the Croatian pop band Riva, which won the Eurovision Song Contest 1989 for Yugoslavia, with the song Rock Me.
Currently Emilija is a solo artist in Croatia. She tried her luck at the national Dora festival, whose winner was to represent Croatia at Eurovision. She came joint 6th at Dora 2008.
At Dora 2011 she was part of the jury and also performed Rock Me.
