TONYI POPPINS EXPLORES THE COSTA RICAN JUNGLE

Tonyi Poppins in La Cascada path, Costa Rica
Tonyi Poppins has visited Costa Rica, the amazing and wonderful Central American country, whose national natural parks are one of the most wonderful things around the planet, and whose people are charming, pleasant and unforgettable.

Costa Rica or the Republic of Costa Rica is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Ecuador to the south of Cocos Island. It has a population of around 4.9 million, in a land area of 51,060 square kilometers; over 300,000 live in the capital and largest city, San José with a population of an estimated 333,980 in 2015.

More information: Costa Rica

Costa Rica has been known for its stable democracy in a region that has had some instability and for its highly educated workforce, most of whom speak English.

Other challenges facing the country in its attempts to improve the economy by increasing foreign investment include a poor infrastructure and a need to improve public sector efficiency.

Historians have classified the indigenous people of Costa Rica as belonging to the Intermediate Area, where the peripheries of the Mesoamerican and Andean native cultures overlapped. More recently, pre-Columbian Costa Rica has also been described as part of the Isthmo-Colombian Area.

The oldest evidence, stone tool making, of human occupation in Costa Rica is associated with the arrival of various groups of hunter-gatherers about 10,000 to 7,000 years BCE in the Turrialba Valley. The presence of Clovis culture type spearheads and arrows from South America opens the possibility that, in this area, two different cultures coexisted.

Agriculture became evident in the populations that lived in Costa Rica about 5,000 years ago. They mainly grew tubers and roots, like carrots. For the first and second millennia BCE there were already settled farming communities. These were small and scattered, although the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture as the main livelihood in the territory is still unknown.

Accounts differ as to whether the name la costa rica, Spanish for rich coast, was first applied by Christopher Columbus, who sailed to the eastern shores of Costa Rica during his final voyage in 1502, and reported the presence of vast quantities of gold jewelry among the natives, or by the conquistador Gil González Dávila, who landed on the west coast in 1522, met with the natives, and appropriated some of their gold.

Like the rest of Central America, Costa Rica never fought for independence from Spain. On September 15, 1821, after the final Spanish defeat in the Mexican War of Independence (1810–1821), the authorities in Guatemala declared the independence of all of Central America. That date is still celebrated as Independence Day in Costa Rica even though, technically, under the Spanish Constitution of 1812 that had been readopted in 1820, Nicaragua and Costa Rica had become an autonomous province with its capital in León.

Historically, Costa Rica has generally enjoyed greater peace and more consistent political stability compared with many of its fellow Latin American nations.

Since the late 19th century, however, Costa Rica has experienced two significant periods of violence until its first democratic election under the new constitution in 1953. Since then, Costa Rica has held 14 presidential elections. The country is the region's most stable.

During the 41 years that have elapsed since Costa Rica abolished its army, our fundamental freedoms have never been threatened,
nor do we know a shameful history of repression.

SANTS & TERRA D'ESCUDELLA, ENJOY THE TRADITION

Enjoying in Plaça Osca, Sants
Today, The Grandma is in Sants, a beautiful neighborhood in the southern part of Barcelona. She has received a wonderful visit when Laura Collins, Tonyi Poppins and Isa Doe have arrived to participate in Festa Major, the Sants Festival, and have dinner in Terra d'Escudella, one of the best restaurants of the Catalan city.

Sants is formerly an industrial town on the plain bordering Barcelona, known as Santa Maria de Sants, it belongs nowadays to the district of Sants-Montjuïc and is bordered by the districts of Eixample to the northeast, Les Corts to the northwest, and by the municipality of l'Hospitalet de Llobregat to the south.

Sants is a neighborhood with a clear identity because of its historical origins. It was the main core of an independent village until 1897 when it became part of Barcelona, the former municipality of Sants included most of the actual neighborhood of Sants-Montjuïc district. By then, Sants had a population of 19,105 inhabitants, and the neighbourhood had a strong industrial character, home to some of the most important manufacturers of textiles, such as Espanya Industrial and Vapor Vell.

More information: Sants-Montjuïc District

In the spring of 1883, the municipalities of Sants and Barcelona decided by mutual agreement to merge the two respective municipalities. One year later, the central government annulled the merger due to technical issues. The process was again put in motion the following year.

City hall sent a request for aggregation to the Diputació Provincial de Barcelona, but this request was not fulfilled for more than two years. In March 1889, the Civil Government asked the Deputation to solve the case, which ultimately reflected the interests of the city. A commission presided by Rius i Taulet traveled to Madrid to help move along the case. However, once more, the Deputation took no action.

The main artery of the neighborhood is Carrer de Sants, popularly known as Carretera de Sants, which unites Plaça Espanya with the neighbouring municipality of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. It is one of the most commercial streets in Barcelona. Among the places that stand out in Sants are the Barcelona Sants railway station, the major railway station in Barcelona, and the Parc de l'Espanya Industrial.

The most famous feast is the Festa Major, which is celebrated yearly in honor of the patron saint, Bartholomew the Apostle. During the week-long feast, the traffic is cut off in several parts of the neighborhood, where multiple popular activities are organized outdoors, such as butifarrades, xocolatades -gatherings where people drink chocolate-, concerts, Sardanes, and Habaneres. The neighbors decorate the streets with allegorical themes. Another feast, the Festa Alternativa, is celebrated simultaneously with great success.

Enjoying Sants and Terra d'Escudella
Festa Major de Sants 2017 started on Saturday 19th August 2017. Many of the main activities are being place in Parc de l'Espanya Industrial and it's nice to walk around the 22 streets in the Sants Festival area which are decorated by residents in colourful themes.

Visitors can enjoy papier-mache giants and big heads -called gegants and capgrossos- on various events including the opening parade and at the giants ball. There are also a chance to see festive and impressive Catalan traditions like the correfoc firerun which usually starts at Plaça Osca for children and for aducts and there is usually a human castle building event at Plaça Bonet i Muixí. Sporting highlights of the Sants Festa Major are the bike race and the 2 kilometres run.

The Sants neighbourhood Festa Major festival finishes with a Piromusical fireworks and music display at Parc Espanya Industrial.

Isa Doe, Laura Collins, Tonyi Poppins and The Grandma have enjoyed a wondeful afternoon-evening in Sants taking lots of photos of its streets, enjoying the charming character of its inhabitants and having dinner in the best restaurant of the neighbourhood: Terra d'Escudella.

Welcome everybody to this Festa Major and enjoy it!.

Popular productions have their own identity,
unmistakable and very difficult to define,
the folds of the human soul
are immensely multiple and diverse,
as are the folds of the collective soul,
or of the people.

CREATING A STORY: TONYI POPPINS

Yorkshire Terrier
WHO? Tonyi Poppins & Yoko

WHERE? In my city

WHEN? Nowadays

WHAT? Yoko, my dog

I like dogs. I have got one. She’s a Yorkshire, an original British dog! She’s little and funny and she likes playing with her toys. She doesn’t disturb at home because she’s very tidy and obedient. I like animals and I would like some better laws that would protect them. Animals are part of our society and we must respect and take care of them. If we want to be an advanced society we must respect environment: nature, animals and recycling.

The more I see of men, the more I like dogs.

BE THE QUEEN? MAMMA MIA!

Cocodrilo Dundee
Yesterday, The Poppins had another beautiful day. First, they started with some grammar: Past Continuous (While/When), Conditional Simple and how to convert an uncountable noun in countable.

More information: Conditional Simple

Later, the family assisted to an incredible class of fashion and trend thanks to Lulú Addams-Poppins who is a professional of these themes.

The family is finishing its Australian holiday and they’re crossing the desert with the help of an old Grandma's friend, Cocodrilo Dundee. They're travelling across it to homage Priscilla and her friends and because of this, they chose The PoppinsQueen: Tonyi.

After remembering ABBA and some mystic writers like Ramon Llull, San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa de Jesús, they continued its travel with the idea of enjoying these last hours in the south hemisphere.

Tomorrow, The Poppins will pack their suitcases again and they will travel to San Francisco in The USA, where Susana Poppins has a mission to do.

RECYCLING: A NEW CHANCE

Today, The Poppins have spent a beautiful day talking about recycling and seeing Tonyi Poppins’ creations. In a family plenty of artists, like The Poppins, you never know which will be the next surprise. After an unforgettable day with Cristina Poppins and an exciting day with the family singing to win Eurovision, Tonyi has offered another fantastic day teaching how to recycle and create art.

After, the family has received a packet from Barcelona. MJ has sent a great present to them: two fantastic books to learn more English.

Finally, Laura Poppins has talked about love and Isa “The Second” Poppins about Malta, her hometown and The Grandma has remembered an old lover: Corto Maltese, an adventurer, a sailor, a dream...

It has been another unforgettable day but, obviously, not the last.

When an adult enters into the world of dreams is forever.
Do you know, don’t you?

BE VISIBLE: TRUST ON PUBLIC SERVICES

Ofelia
Today, The Poppins have studied some modal verbs like Must and Need and have revised Should. They have done some exercises about Social English and they’ve chosen which model of exam they want to do.

The family, which is still in Scotland, wanted to start to search Nessie but the latest news about Eurovision Song Contest have changed their plans. Isa from Malta, Lulú from Russia, Carmen from Czech Republic and M.José from The Netherlands have arrived to the final, which will be celebrated next Saturday in Stockholm (Sweden).

The Grandma has talked about using some kind of tools to search an employment and about their utility and reliability. She has put like an example the case of her old friend Ofèlia Puig, who is a great fan of social networks. She has tried to explain that the most important thing in a job searching is the own person and, maybe, the tools aren’t sometimes as useful and honest as we think but nevertheless we must try it.

Finally, Tonyi Poppins in her name and in Irina's has answered lots of questions about her participation and experience in Eurovision Song Contest.

Tomorrow, they’re preparing Nessie’s searching and they’re starting to work with connectors and prepositions.
