RICHARD W. VAN DYKE, FROM BERT TO DR MARK SLOAN

Today, The Grandma is relaxing at home. She is watching some of her favourite movies and she has chosen Walt Disney's Mary Poppins, a classic masterpiece. She has remembered one of her beloved families, The Poppins, and she has enjoyed the movie a lot.

One of the stars of Mary Poppins is Dick Van Dyke, Bert and Mr. Dawes Senior in the movie, the unforgettable actor who was born on a day like today in 1925.

Richard Wayne Van Dyke (born December 13, 1925) is an American actor, comedian, writer, singer, and dancer, whose award-winning career has spanned seven decades.

Van Dyke first gained recognition on radio and Broadway, then he became known for his role as Rob Petrie on the CBS television sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show, which ran from 1961 to 1966. He also gained significant popularity for roles in the musical films Bye Bye Birdie (1963), Mary Poppins (1964), and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968).

His other prominent film appearances include roles in The Comic (1969), Dick Tracy (1990), Curious George (2006), Night at the Museum (2006), Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014), and Mary Poppins Returns (2018). Other prominent TV roles include the leads in The New Dick Van Dyke Show (1971–74), Diagnosis: Murder (1993–2001), and Murder 101 (2006–08) which both co-starred his son Barry.

Van Dyke is the recipient of five Primetime Emmys, a Tony, and a Grammy Award, and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1995. He received the Screen Actors Guild's highest honor, the SAG Life Achievement Award, in 2013. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard and has also been recognized as a Disney Legend.

Van Dyke was born on December 13, 1925, in West Plains, Missouri, to Hazel Victoria, a stenographer, and Loren Wayne Cookie Van Dyke (1898–1976), a salesman. He grew up in Danville, Illinois. He is the older brother of actor Jerry Van Dyke (1931–2018), who sometimes appeared as his brother in The Dick Van Dyke Show but is best known for a role in the TV series Coach.

Van Dyke is a Dutch surname, although he has English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry as well. His family line traces back to Mayflower passenger John Alden.

Among Van Dyke's high school classmates in Danville were Donald O'Connor and Bobby Short, both of whom would go on to successful careers as entertainers. One of his closest friends was a cousin of Gene Hackman, the future actor, who also lived in Danville in those years.

Van Dyke's mother's family was very religious, and for a brief period in his youth, he considered a career in ministry, although a drama class in high school convinced him that his true calling was as a professional entertainer. In his autobiography, he wrote, I suppose that I never completely gave up my childhood idea of being a minister. Only the medium and the message changed. I have still endeavored to touch people's souls, to raise their spirits and put smiles on their faces.

Even after the launch of his career as an entertainer, he taught Sunday school in the Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, and he continued to read such theologians as Martin Buber, Paul Tillich, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who helped explain in practical terms the relevance of religion in everyday life.

Van Dyke left high school in 1944, his senior year, intending to join the United States Army Air Forces for pilot training during World War II. Denied enlistment several times for being underweight, he was eventually accepted for service as a radio announcer before transferring to the Special Services and entertaining troops in the continental United States.

Van Dyke's start in television was with WDSU-TV New Orleans Channel 6 (NBC), first as a single comedian and later as emcee of a comedy program.

Van Dyke's first network TV appearance was with Dennis James on James' Chance of a Lifetime in 1954.

From 1961 to 1966, Van Dyke starred in the CBS sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show, in which he portrayed a comedy writer named Rob Petrie.

Van Dyke began his film career by playing the role of Albert J. Peterson in the film version of Bye Bye Birdie (1963). That same year, Van Dyke was cast in two roles: as the chimney sweep Bert, and as bank chairman Mr. Dawes Senior, in Walt Disney's Mary Poppins (1964).

Van Dyke received a Grammy Award in 1964, along with Julie Andrews, for his performance on the soundtrack to Mary Poppins.

THE BEANS, FADOS & BRITISH LEGENDS IN LISBON

I must ride with my Beans to defend what was,
and the dream of what could be.

Excalibur, Thomas Malory

The Beans, King Arthur & The Round Table Knights
Today, The Beans have enjoyed another wonderful day together. It's very difficult for The Grandma to write a post today because although she knows that it's the end of a season, it's also the beginning of another one full of hope, effort and common help in the distance.

The Grandma has tried  to share her knowledge with The Beans during some months and she's very happy with the effort and commitment demonstrated by all of them. Listening to old stories, remembering personal memories, talking about literature, history or music, she has tried to cheer them to start again in the wonderful adventure of learning.

Without temporal goals and without pressure only with the idea of enjoying every moment and giving the best of everyone; without the obligation of demonstrating anything, only with the intention of having an open mind to discover new cultures, countries and stories, The Beans have demonstrated that they are ready to confront whatever they want if they have the strong idea of doing it and the most important, that they are not alone in this difficult and long way to find a success route that determinates the closer future.

It's very important to trust in yourself to be ready to get over the difficulties but it's also very important to know and reaffirm that you are doing this travel rounded by your special family, fourteen different people with different characters, points of views and origins  but with the same objective: learning new things every day and enjoying every moment, because it's not important where they come from but where they are going to arrive.

One day, a Bean will come, and the sword will rise... again.

Excalibur, Thomas Malory

Every member of the family has offered her/his colour to a multicultural family that has been able to work very hard every day. Every one of them is important and necessary because The Beans are a sum of all of them and they have left his/her footstep in this wonderful family that is called to do something fantastic in the closer future. Teamwork is the secret of their success, feeling important as a part of a totality and being missed when you're not with them, this family has shined a light in every colour of our hearts.

That's no way to say goodbye
The Grandma is sad and staying in Lisbon is a good way to try to change this sadness to joy. She loves fado and admires Mísia, one of her favourite female singers. They have a lot of things in common: both of them are adult, both of them have a life full of incredible stories, both of them have common Catalan origins and both of them like poetry and literature. The most importance difference between them is that Mísia has one of the most incredible voices around the world, and The Grandma has big ears to listen to her fados.

More information: Ancient

Some people say that The Beans don't exist and all is a legend although all the legends have a true base. These same people explain that this legend has been transmitted from generation to generation in an oral way across the Via Rubricatus towns with different versions talking about different families with different surnames: The Collins, The Addams, The Holmes, The Poppins, The Bonds or recently, The Beans.

Princess Leia and R2D2
All the versions of this legend have points in common, a reduced number of people who worked very strong to find something they thought they have lost: trust in themselves and force to continue fighting; an old woman with an undetermined age over the 90's, very rich, who loved explaining old-fashioned stories and was a fan of the Middle-Age, -especially Ramon Llull and King Arthur novels- and contemporany fiction like Star Wars films and The X Files Series; and who tries to follow their teachings.

From Ramon Llull, she learnt to think and question things without believing in official versions; from King Arthur, the value of the Round Table: honour, courage, loyalty, teamwork and enough imagination to create their own universe to protect themselves from the enemy; from Star Wars, she learnt to fight against the dark forces; and from The X Files to not give up searching the truth.

This is not the end, this is the beginning of a new season because the best is always ready to arrive.

Ask ev'ry person if he's heard the story;
And tell it strong and clear if he has not:
That once there was a fleeting wisp of glory
Called The Beans Family.
The Beans! The Beans!
Camelot, Alan Jay Lerne

Fado is a music genre that can be traced to the 1820s in Lisbon, Portugal, but probably has much earlier origins. Fado historian and scholar Rui Vieira Nery states that the only reliable information on the history of Fado was orally transmitted and goes back to the 1820s and 1830s at best. But even that information was frequently modified within the generational transmission process that made it reach us today.

Although the origins are difficult to trace, today fado is commonly regarded as simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain traditional structure. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sentiment of resignation, fatefulness and melancholia. This is loosely captured by the Portuguese word saudade, or longing, symbolizing a feeling of loss, a permanent, irreparable loss and its consequent lifelong damage.

More information: Mísia Official Website

This connection to the music of a historic Portuguese urban and maritime proletariat: sailors, dock workers, port traders and other working-class people in general, can also be found in Brazilian modinha and Indonesian kroncong, although all these music genres subsequently developed their own independent traditions.

On 27 November 2011, fado was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. It is one of two Portuguese music traditions part of the lists, the other being Cante Alentejano.

THE GRANDMA RETURNS FROM ANDORRA LA VELLA

The Grandma has returned to meet a new family
The Grandma has returned. After some months of living alone after saying goodbye to The Bonds and since September, 20 when she suffered an incredible attack and left to publish on her blog.

She is on fire again and she's ready to start a new journey with a new family.

She's going to leave Andorra la Vella today, her hometown where she has been skiing and visiting her old neighbours and friends.

Tomorrow, December 18, The Grandma is going to join with a new family: The Beans. She doesn't know a lot of things about them, in the same way that they don't know anything about her but MJ and M have been preparing the possibility of starting a new journey together, a journey plenty of adventures, good feelings and unforgettable moments.

She's very happy to start a new life with a new family because she has great memories about her past ones: The Collins, The Addams, The Holmes, The Poppins and The Bonds. She hopes her new family accepts her as a new member and they can travel around the world, discover new cultures and learning a lot of English.

Welcome to The Grandma's Logbook again! We follow...

THE LEGEND OF THE GHOST OF A GRANDMA IN SANT BOI

The ghost of The Grandma in Sant Boi
There's a legend, an ancient legend that people from Sant Boi tell from grandparents to grandsons. It's a story about a ghost of a mysterious woman who appears  in a roundabout, near the entrance to the city.

The legend says she's the spirit of a Grandma who had survived the most incredible events of the 20th century, even she had survived to die burnt but one day, meanwhile she was driving by car, she decided to jump out through the window and stay in Sant Boi forever and ever.

Nobody never knew why she did it but the legend says it was very difficult to her to live separated from their families: The Collins, The Addams, The Holmes, The Poppins and The Bonds and she decided to join her spirit to them for the rest of her days.

Legends are material to be moulded, and not facts to be recorded.

THE BONDS: THE FAMILY WHO CAME IN FROM SANT BOI

Selfie near the Church of Sant Baldiri in Sant Boi
Today, The Grandma finishes her current posts in this logbook. From now, she's going to write about her new family: The Bonds

Tomorrow, The Grandma is going to be in Sant Boi where she's going to meet her new family: sixteen new members.

From tomorrow, December 27 until March 7, The Grandma will share her new family affairs here and she will explain their adventures everyday.

Welcome to this new family. Lots of luck and tons of effort to offer in this new project. Welcome to The Bonds and thousands of memories about The Collins, The Addams, The Holmes and The Poppins. You're an eternal part of The Grandma's story.

Come on Bonds, the History is waiting for us!

I don't regard James Bond precisely as a hero, but at least he does get on and do his duty, in an extremely corny way.

THE POPPINS: BORN TO WIN

Sant Boi de Llobregat
Today, The Poppins are closing their circle. It started last April and during these months they have been working very hard to improve their English. They have created a big and unforgettable family and, obviously, they will continue their lives across different paths returning to the beginning and reconnecting with their dreams and proposals again.

The Grandma is preparing her summer holidays in Andorra, her hometown. She’s very proud of the Poppins and she knows, because she lived the same situation, that days like today seem very hard and difficult but they’re exciting because the most important is arriving to the exam and do it. This is the real prize, this is the fantastic triumph and this is the real meaning of this family: do things because we can do them, don’t resign in front of difficulties and don’t give up. Never give up.

We don’t know anything about our closer future but we can guess that it will be difficult, as difficult as it was for other generations but if they survived, we are going to do it, too.

Some centuries ago, some little villages and towns started to grow up along an important and brave river: the Via Rubricatus. This Latin name was adopted because of the red colour of its water. One of these little towns became very popular and famous because of its natural beauty and the importance of its Roman terms. Years later, the city was an important site during the Succession War in the 18th Century and nowadays is recognized for being the Antoni Gaudí’s testing ground that helped him to create his wonderful buildings. The city is the result of a mix of cultures, like all its country, a directly consequence of growing up between the Via Augusta and the Via Rubricatus

Perhaps, some people know its famous doctor who battles against cancer day by day, its historical rugby player who practised this sport for the first time in the town, its popular fashion designer or its two famous NBA players but the History, in capital letters, will write that this city was the hometown of The Poppins, an intelligent, brave and funny family that has become unforgettable.

Come on Poppins! We have born to win!

Your town is very important - The Grandma

THE POPPINS: SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS

The Poppins
She closed the door. Behind it, there were hundreds of incredible moments lived with her last family, The Poppins. The sun shone. It was 14:30 and she must talk with her boss before returning at home. While she was walking across the hot corridor, she thought in the first day when one of the Poppins explained her, her doubts about continuing in the course. It was a hard moment, how can you convince anyone who didn’t know you to trust in you and in a new course? She continued walking until the electrical panel. She opened it and switch off the lights.

It has been an intensive day, in fact, it has been the last day and although she has tried to do a normal class, it has been impossible because the last day is always a special day, a day plenty of feeling, emotions and hidden confessions. She was very proud of every member of that unforgettable family. They remembered her when she was younger and tried to study English and suffered a lot to understand her teacher, his cassettes, his listening. How many times she thought that she wasn’t going to learn this language? How many hours studying the same and understanding nothing?  How many failed exams? How many bad days? Too many, perhaps, but she was lucky to find a person who believed that she could do it.

She crossed the little space which separated the classrooms and the reception and entered in it. She always had a big smile for the receptionists. A course is the result of the effort of a lot of people and you must be pleasant with them because they’re attending you every day and offering their best to help you. The receptionist smiled in a funny way and asked her about her presents while she was showing them to her. They were incredibly made by heart. She hadn’t had enough words because she was astonished and she didn’t know what to say.

She had a meeting with her boss, a wonderful woman with a great sense of humour, something very important to survive nowadays. They talked about the course and about the future. She was very thankful with all the coordinators of the centre because when she had nothing, they trusted on her.

She left the centre without knowing if she was going to return someday but happy with the success of the last courses. By the way, she found another Poppins and they were talking during some minutes before she took her car and drove home.

An incredible feeling of sadness invaded her. She was going to miss The Poppins. They had been her perfect family during more than three months and she had met strong and wonderful people

She is very shy. She doesn’t like talking but listening. She loves poetry and music. She doesn’t understand anything but accept it. She hates intolerance and tries to survive in the middle of an understandable world. She thinks that you must fight your future. She thinks that you can arrive, if you believe in it. She knows that life is a game and you must play your best cards. She trusts in The Poppins. She trusts in them in the same way that some years ago someone trusted in her. We only need a little of external trust, we are able to offer all the rest.

She’s Carmen; she’s Cristina, she’s Eli, she’s Esther, she’s Irina, she’s Isa 1st, she’s Isa 2nd, she’s Jennifer, she’s Laura, she’s Lulú, she’s Núria, she’s Saharay, she’s Susana and she’s Tonyi. She’s the sum of all of them because we’re all connected.

We are the champions, my friends,
And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end.
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the world.

CREATING A MICROTALE: WHO? WHERE? WHEN? WHAT?

Keep Calm
Yesterday, The Poppins continued their studies in Labour Integration. While the family was learning new skills to find a job, The Grandma put her business in order. The course is arriving to the end and The Grandma is closing affairs and preparing new objectives for her family, one of them, how to pass a speaking with success.

A PET Exam isn’t an easy thing, especially when the student has been a lot of years without revising the subject. The Grandma is going to explain how to create a microtale, a good tool to practise in the speaking.

A microtale is a short story where the most important is answering the elemental questions: Who? Where? When? What? with a few words and using an easy vocabulary to feel comfortable during the speaking and avoid nerves and hysterias.

It’s usually a first person and real story where the main character is the narrator. This microtale is often plenty of hilarious situations and lots of sense of humour. The objective of this story is to explain something that can be controlled by the narrator and creates a point of empathy between the student and the examiner. The Grandma has practised this technique during all her travels with The Poppins. She has explained lots of short stories to her family and she has always tried to connect every story with a present fact.

Finally, The Grandma has prepared some new material for The Poppins. For one hand, attending to Susana Poppins, she has written a small dictionary about Commercial Vocabulary and for other hand, attending to Isa Poppins, she has created a resume of some Verb Tenses.

The Poppins are finishing their trip in Washington DC and they're going to travel to Switzerland where The Grandma hopes to arrive tomorrow evening.

LABOUR INTEGRATION: COURAGE & PERSISTENCE

Let's go to work!
A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a written overview of a person's experience and other qualifications. In some countries, a CV is typically the first item that a potential employer encounters regarding the job seeker and is typically used to screen applicants, often followed by an interview.

In the United Kingdom, most Commonwealth countries, and Ireland, a CV is short (usually a maximum of two sides of A4 paper), and therefore contains only a summary of the job seeker's employment history, qualifications, education, and some personal information. Some parts of Asia require applicants' photos, date of birth, and most recent salary information. CVs are often tailored to change the emphasis of the information according to the particular position for which the job seeker is applying. A CV can also be extended to include an extra page for the job-seeker's publications if these are important for the job.

In the United States, Canada, Australia and India, a CV is a comprehensive document used in academic circles and medical careers that elaborates on education, publications, and other achievements. A CV contains greater detail than a résumé, a shorter summary which is more often used in applications for jobs, but it is often expected that professionals use a short CV that highlights the current focus of their academic lives and not necessarily their full history. A CV is generally used when applying to a position in academia, while a resume is generally used when applying to a position in industry, non-profit, and the public sector.

Curriculum Vitae is a Latin expression which can be loosely translated as [the] course of [my] life. In current usage, curriculum is less marked as a foreign loanword. Traditionally the word vitae is rendered in English using the ligature æ, hence vitæ, although this convention is less common in contemporary practice.

The plural of curriculum vitae, in Latin, is formed following Latin rules of grammar as curricula vitae (meaning "courses of life")—not curriculum vita (which is grammatically incorrect), nor curricula vitarum. The form vitae is the singular genitive of vita and is translated as "of life".

In English, the plural of the full expression curriculum vitae is seldom used; the plural of curriculum on its own is usually written as "curricula", rather than the traditional curriculums.

Today, The Poppins are participating in some Labour Integration classes. This afternoon, they're going to meet Barack in the White House. They arrive with a long list of demands and reclaims to be listened and done.

The family continues its preparation for the PET Exam doing some Reading and Comprehension Exercises to improve their personal levels of English knowledge.

JUNE, 15: THE HOLMES DAY

Today, The Grandma has received some fantastic news from Cambridge

While The Poppins were still visiting Washington DC in their American trip, The Grandma came back to Barcelona last Saturday to stay in the last concert of Amaral in the Catalan capital. Although, The Grandma is a great fan of this group, the real reason of her return was being in the city to wait news about the Holmes' Cambridge exam.

The day has arrived and The Holmes and The Grandma are excited after the fantastic results and marks of this unforgettable family. For one hand, all members of the family have reached a Cambridge Certificate and for other hand, Manoli and Núria Holmes have reached another Catalan Certificate.

The Holmes are plenty of happiness and they want to share it with the rest of the families, especially with The Poppins, the next family who is going to certificate in Cambridge next month.

Finally, The Holmes are celebrating Rosa's wedding anniversary in a private party in this moment.

Congratulations Holmes! You're fantastic, unforgettable and eternal!

EXAMS? TRUST ON YOURSELVES.

Yesterday, The Poppins practised a part of a PET Official Exam. It was a hard day because the family was exhausted after an intensive weekend in Washington DC visiting a lot of places.

After, the family studied Reported Speech and talked a little about effort, hope and work and the importance of being flexible.

More information: Reported Speech

The course is arriving to the end and the family is going to take different paths very soon but they always must remember that they’re Poppins and this surname is plenty of energy, magic and power.

Today and tomorrow, the family is assisting to Occupational Health Hazards and Safe classes and they’re learning about these dangerous risks in their works.

During exams, students look up for inspiration,

WASHINGTON DC: I HAVE A DREAM

Martin Luther King
Yesterday, The Poppins studied the order of complements in English syntax and the difference between Because and Because of. They also did some exercises about Past Simple and Past Perfect and read a new chapter of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.

More information: Because-Because of

After this work, they listened the beautiful Isa Poppins’ speaking about Love Birds and they talked about different themes with the idea of preparing the next exam.

The family is in Washington where The Grandma wants to visit The Lincoln Memorial and evocate Martin Luther King Jr., a person who she admires with all her heart.
More information: Conjunctions

Today, they’re going to visit the Potomac Park and Georgetown University in the morning; The Tomas Jefferson Memorial in the afternoon and The Smithsonian Institution (aka Jeffersonian Institution) where they’re going to visit Temperance Brennan (aka Bones) and her scientific team in the evening.

ISA POPPINS: MARCELINA & CIPRI (MICROTALE)

A lovebird is one of nine species of the genus Agapornis (Greek: αγάπη agape 'love'; όρνις ornis 'bird'). They are a social and affectionate small parrot. Eight species are native to the African continent, and the grey-headed lovebird is native to Madagascar. Their name comes from the parrots' strong, monogamous pair bonding and the long periods which paired birds spend sitting together.

Lovebirds live in small flocks and eat fruit, vegetables, grasses and seed. Black-winged lovebirds also eat insects and figs, and the black-collared lovebirds have a special dietary requirement for native figs, making them problematic to keep in captivity.

Some species are kept as pets, and several color mutations were selectively bred in aviculture. Their average lifespan is 10 to 15 years.

Lovebirds are 13 to 17 centimeters in length and 40 to 60 grams in weight. They are among the smallest parrots, characterized by a stocky build, a short blunt tail, and a relatively large, sharp beak. Wildtype lovebirds are mostly green with a variety of colors on their upper body, depending on the species.

The Fischer's lovebird, black-cheeked lovebird, and the masked lovebird have a prominent white ring around their eyes. Many color mutant varieties have been produced by selective breeding of the species that are popular in aviculture.

Isa Poppins closed the webpage after reading some information about Love birds. She was preparing a little conference about them to expose to the rest of the family. All The Poppins knew how Isa loves the animals, especially Love birds, and all the family was enchanted when she decided to explain them her knowledge about this theme.

Isa took her camera and recorded some live moments about Cipri and Marcelina, her beautiful pets, and their children.

After, she sat in front of the computer and created a presentation about them. In this, she talks about the different species and their characteristics.

Some days later, when she was in front of her family explaining it, she felt a little nervous. It’s normal when you’re a shy person but she’s courageous and funny and did one of the nicest and kindest expositions that the family remembers.

Congratulations Isa Poppins, you’re fantastic!

SUPERHEROES: SACRIFICE & HUMILITY

Yesterday, The Poppins worked Third Conditional and revised some grammar aspects like Present Perfect, Past Simple, Present Continuous and Past Simple Passive.

The family is preparing the PET Exam and they practised with different texts which demonstrated that it’s not only a question of knowing but understanding and not doing mistakes.

More information: PET Online Examples

After this, some members of the family talked about life and difficult situations that appear suddenly and how to fight against inconveniences appreciating good people and refusing bad ones.
