KNICKS VS. NETS, ENJOYING BASKETBALL IN NEW YORK

Today, The Grangers & The Grandma has been reading about the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets, the two American professional basketball teams based in New York City, one in Manhattan and the other in Brooklyn. Before this, they have studied the Comparative.

The New York Knickerbockers, shortened and more commonly referred to as the New York Knicks, are an American professional basketball team based in the New York City borough of Manhattan.

The Knicks compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference

The team plays its home games at Madison Square Garden, an arena they share with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL).

They are one of two NBA teams located in New York City; the other team is the Brooklyn Nets. Alongside the Boston Celtics, the Knicks are one of two original NBA teams still located in its original city.

The team, established by Ned Irish in 1946, was one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which became the NBA after merging with the rival National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949.

The Knicks were successful during their early years and were constant playoff contenders under the franchise's first head coach Joe Lapchick. Beginning in 1950, the Knicks made three consecutive appearances in the NBA Finals, all of which were losing efforts. Lapchick resigned in 1956 and the team subsequently began to falter.

It was not until the late 1960s when Red Holzman became the head coach that the Knicks began to regain their former dominance. Holzman successfully guided the Knicks to two NBA championships, in 1970 and 1973. The Knicks of the 1980s had mixed success that included six playoff appearances; however, they failed to participate in the NBA Finals.

The playoff-level Knicks of the 1990s were led by future Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing; this era was marked by passionate rivalries with the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, and Miami Heat. During this time, they were known for playing tough defense under head coaches Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy, making NBA Finals appearances in 1994 and 1999. However, they were unable to win an NBA championship during this era.

Since 2000, the Knicks have struggled to regain their former successes, but won their first division title in 19 years in 2012-13, led by a core of forwards Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire. They were eventually eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Indiana Pacers, and had failed to make the playoffs for eight years until 2020-21 when they were led by forward Julius Randle and sophomore RJ Barrett, who was selected third overall in the 2019 NBA draft.

The Brooklyn Nets are an American professional basketball team based in the New York City borough of Brooklyn.

The Nets compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.

The team plays its home games at Barclays Center.

They are one of two NBA teams located in New York City; the other is the New York Knicks. The club was established in 1967 as a charter franchise of the NBA's rival league, the American Basketball Association (ABA).

They played in New Jersey as the New Jersey Americans during their first season, before relocating to Long Island, New York, in 1968 and changing their name to the New York Nets. During this time, the Nets won two ABA championships (in 1974 and 1976).

In 1976, the ABA merged with the NBA, and the Nets were absorbed into the NBA along with three other ABA teams (the San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers, and Denver Nuggets), all of whom remain in the league to this day.

In 1977, the team returned to New Jersey and played as the New Jersey Nets from 1977 to 2012. Led by star point guard Jason Kidd, the Nets reached the finals of two consecutive NBA seasons (2001-02 and 2002-03), but failed to win either title.

In the summer of 2012, the team moved to Barclays Center in Brooklyn, becoming the first major sports franchise in the borough since the departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team in 1957. Since moving to Brooklyn, the Nets have qualified for the playoffs on six occasions, including trips to the Conference Semifinals in 2014 and 2021.

The Brooklyn Nets were founded in 1967 and initially played in Teaneck, New Jersey, as the New Jersey Americans. In its early years, the team led a nomadic existence, moving to Long Island in 1968 and playing in various arenas there as the New York Nets.

Led by Hall of Famer Julius Dr. J Erving, the Nets won two ABA championships in New York before becoming one of four ABA teams to be admitted into the NBA as part of the ABA–NBA merger in 1976. Unlike the other three ABA teams entering the NBA, who played in cities without any NBA presence, the Nets were required by the NBA to pay an encroachment fee of $4.8 million (equivalent to $23 million in 2021) to the New York Knicks.

The team financed that payment by selling Erving's contract to the Philadelphia 76ers; and the Nets went from winning the last ABA title in 1975-76 to having the worst record in the NBA in 1976–77.

The team then moved back to New Jersey in 1977 and became the New Jersey Nets. During their time in the state, the Nets played in two consecutive NBA Finals in the 2001–02 and 2002–03 seasons, led on the court by point guard Jason Kidd.

After playing 35 seasons in New Jersey, the team moved back to the state of New York, changed its geographic name to Brooklyn, and began playing in the new Barclays Center, starting with the 2012-13 NBA season. The team's move from New Jersey to Brooklyn was approved unanimously by the NBA Board of Governors on April 13, 2012.

When I played with the Knicks,
I was just as important or just as smart
as any other of the guards I played with.
I still had to call out plays, notice schemes,
know the systems, do everything they had to do.

THE BEANS ADOPT A PET: COMPARING SOME OPTIONS

The Beans' pets
Today, The Beans have continued their English classes rewieving some examples of question tags in present simple and the comparative adjectives.

The Grandma has explained a story about the possible origins of Saint George and the Black Virgins and the family has thought about it in their compositions.

The day after visiting the zoo, the family has another goal to reach. They have adopted some new pets with particular characteristics and they need to find a better place from them. It's not an easy work but it's easier if you have enough money to cover their needs.

This afternoon, The Beans have visited the Brooklyn Museum. David Bowie left us in a day like today two years ago and the Museum is preparing a new exposition in his honour next March. The Grandma, who is a great fan of Bowie, still remembers his fantastic concert in the Madison Square Garden in 1997.

Past and present in the Brooklyn Museum
The Brooklyn Museum is an art museum located in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. At 560,000 52,000 m2, the museum is New York City's third largest in physical size and holds an art collection with roughly 1.5 million works.

Located near the Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Flatbush, and Park Slope neighborhoods of Brooklyn and founded in 1895, the Beaux-Arts building, designed by McKim, Mead and White, was planned to be the largest art museum in the world.

The museum initially struggled to maintain its building and collection, only to be revitalized in the late 20th century, thanks to major renovations. Significant areas of the collection include antiquities, specifically their collection of Egyptian antiquities spanning over 3,000 years. The museum also has a Memorial Sculpture Garden which features salvaged architectural elements from throughout New York City.

In the evening, The Beans are going to watch the NBA basketball match between the New York Knicks and the Chicago Bulls in the Madison Square Garden. Edgar Bean, who is a great sportman, is very excited with this proposal because he's a great fan of Carmelo Anthony and in his opinion, the Knicks are better, more original and twenty years older than the Bulls. The Grandma still remembers those incredible nights with Pat Ewing.

 Anxiety and spiritual searching
have been consistent themes with me,
and that figures into my worldview.
But I tend to make my songs
sound like relationship songs.

THE BEANS IN NEW YORK CITY: A STATE OF MIND

The Beans arriving to the Bryant Park Hotel
After a long transoceanic flight, The Beans arrived to New York City with time enough to celebrate Christmas in the capital of the world.

They went to check in their hotel, The Bryant Park Hotel and they started to enjoy their suites. The Bryant Hotel is a very comfortable modern New Yorker-style hotel located in Manhattan near the business district and the most important sights of the city.

More information: The Bryant Park Hotel

During these days, The Beans are going to enjoy the city. Their agendas are full of proposals and activities and they're going to spend some unforgettable days in the city of the skyscrapers.
The Grandma watching Star Trek in her suite

The Grandma has her own agenda and she wants to watch a New York Knicks match and the Barbra Streisand's concert on New Eve's Day in the Madison Square Garden.

She also wants to visit an exposition about Salvador Dalí in the Metropolitan Museum and have a meeting with old friends like Richard Castle and the members of the CSI team in New York City.

Come on Beans, enjoy one of the most beautiful cities around the world, and the most important, enjoy its people and its culture and remember that New York is a state of mind.

It comes down to reality, and it's fine with me cause I've let it slide
I don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside
I don't have any reasons I left them all behind
I'm in a New York state of mind

DEAR IRENE BOND, WHAT CAN WE DO IN SAN FRANCISCO?

The Bonds have had an intensive day
Today, The Bonds are in San Francisco, California where Miriam Bond has joined to Deloris Van Cartier's Gospel Choir. They arrived yesterday evening and they have been remembering their trip in New York City working with connectors, sending some tweets and creating a little composition about it.

They have remembered how the family helped the CSI New York team who was resolving a terrible murder in the city that never sleeps. Moreover, they have evocated how they bought some of the most important places of the city and they have asked for  advice to their best councilor, Irene Bond, one of the most experienced members of this nice family, after remembering how important was the radio during the last century and what happened in October, 30 1938 with Orson Welles in the CBS.

More information: CSI New York

Next, they have been talking about some photos which they took in NYC and how they remembered the city, especially last Friday when they went to the UNO Headquarters and met Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen and lots of fans of the New York Knicks and they experienced one of the most excited adventures: travelling in a bus full of working people.

Finally, the family has received the unexpected visit of M, who has offered them some new material, in that case, an interesting book about Steve Biko, one of the most important citizens against Apartheid.

The revolutionary sees his task as liberation
not only of the oppressed but also of the oppressor.
Happiness can never truly exist in a state of tension.

I WANT TO BE A PART OF IT NEW YORK, NEW YORK

New York City
This afternoon, The Addams Family has just arrived to New York City. At local time 17:16 (23:16 in Sant Boi de Llobregat), the family has gone to rest in The Plaza Hotel when The Grandma has reserved a whole floor for them. They haven’t left their English lessons and have reviewed in the plane some aspects of Present Continuous, Present Simple, Articles and Jobs.

More information: Present Continuous

Tomorrow, they’re visiting the city by public transport (subway and bus) and buying some presents for friends and for Marta, who they don’t forget. If there’s enough time, they will write some postcards for her.

The Grandma has been preparing some guides for the travel: one about New York City and another about The Metropolitan Museum and she has a big interest in watching some matches: one of baseball with the New York Yankees (she admires Derek Jeter) and another of basketball with the New York Knicks (she loved Pat Ewing, when he played).

New York, New York.
I want to wake up, in a city that never sleeps.
And find I'm A-number-one, top of the list, king of the hill, A-number-1...
